The "new broom" on the PGA Tour Champions returns in style: just a few days after his 50th birthday, Zach Johnson won the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational. In his first start on the Senior Tour, the two-time Major winner dominated the field, ending a drought of over ten years.
It was a historic Sunday on the "Old Course" of the Broken Sound Club. Zach Johnson, who only reached the required age of 50 for the Tour on February 24, secured the title with a commanding final round of 69 (-3). With a total score of 11 under Par (205 strokes), he left the competition around Stewart Cink and George McNeill a clear four strokes behind him.

For statisticians, this victory offered a curious parallel: Johnson's last major triumph dated back to July 2015, when he won the Open Championship. Exactly 3,884 days lie between lifting the Claret Jug and his current success in Florida. Remarkably, he won both victories on a course called the "Old Course" - back then in St. Andrews, the "Home of Golf", and now in Boca Raton.
"For my children to finally see me win again means everything to me," said a visibly moved Johnson after the round. The American, who suffered a painful defeat as Ryder Cup captain in Rome in 2023, seemed liberated and full of energy for his new chapter.
With his success on his first start, Johnson joins an elite circle. He is only the 22nd player in the history of the PGA Tour Champions to win on his debut. This puts him in line with icons such as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Phil Mickelson. He is also one of only 24 professionals to have won at least one title on all three levels - the PGA Tour, the Korn Ferry Tour and the Champions Tour.
However, Sunday's victory was no walk in the park. Although Johnson started the final day with a one-stroke lead, he lost it briefly due to an early Bogey on hole 3 and a simultaneous Birdie by George McNeill. But Johnson responded promptly: a 10-meter Putt on the 4th put him back on track. He steadily extended his lead with further Birdies on the 7th, 12th and 16th and was visibly enjoying the walk down the 18th fairway.

Behind the beaming winner, Padraig Harrington in particular made the headlines. After a disastrous 79 at the start, the Irishman staged a furious comeback. With rounds of 66 and a final 65 (the best score of the day on Sunday), he fought his way up to a share of fourth place. Harrington had words of praise for the newcomer after the tournament:
"Zach is still extremely competitive on the regular Tour. You only have a limited window on the Champions Tour where you have a physical advantage over the older guys - and that's where Zach is now."
The win flushes Johnson straight into third place in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, while Stewart Cink retains the lead despite finishing second. For Johnson, this success is just the beginning: he has already announced that he will play a full schedule on the Senior Tour this year, but still wants to tee off at selected PGA Tour events - including the Masters in April.
"If my body plays ball, I'll keep pushing," said Johnson. "I'm just grateful to be here. This Tour is so incredibly welcoming."
