As a golf fan, you've probably heard of the organization PGA, which is responsible for the most relevant golf tour in the United States. This takes place on three levels and also includes the eponymous PGA Tour, which is the most highly endowed tournament series in the world. The tour has a long tradition, but has undergone several reforms in recent years, including the so-called signature events.
The PGA Tour has more than a hundred years of history behind it. Did you know that the organization was founded back in 1916? Back then, however, it was still called the “Professional Golfers' Association of America.” In 1968, there was a break among those involved, which finally resulted in the PGA Tour as we know it today. Since then, it has been an independent tour for professional golfers, which has long since developed into an internationally popular brand. The aim of the association is to organize high-quality and, of course, top-class tournaments that are equally interesting for players and spectators.
For many years, the association has organized the three most important tours in US golf. In particular, these are the following:
• PGA Tour (top-level tour with total prize money of up to 400 million US dollars)
• Korn Ferry Tour (second-level tour, formerly known as Web.com Tour)
• Champions Tour (for professional golfers over 50)
Even a traditional organization like this must keep up with the times and adapt to the changing needs of players and fans. Since 2024, there has therefore been an innovation in the tour: These eight events are characterized by increased prize money and are also a response to growing competition from alternative golf leagues.
The top events on the PGA Tour take place at East Lake Golf Club. The most famous names in this context include reigning winner Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Austrian Sepp Straka, as well as golf legend Tiger Woods, who dominated events between 1999 and 2009, both with the most victories and the highest winning amounts. Scottie Scheffler has been at the top of the money rankings since 2022: In 2024, the American was able to earn a whopping 29,228,357 US dollars. This is the highest PGA Tour prize money achieved so far in the history of events.
