A player in the top 100 of the current world rankings? That doesn't happen often in the German Golf League (DGL) presented by All4Golf. Helen Briem makes it possible. On the fourth match day of the 1st Bundesliga Süd at the Munich GC, the national player was there for her Stuttgart GC Solitude. On the challenging course (loops B and C) in the south of the Bavarian capital, she carded a bogey-free 68 (-4) in the singles on Saturday, the lowest round of the day.
"It's a welcome change from everyday Tour life and of course nice to see the girls again after such a long time and to go out on the course with them," says Briem. The detour to Munich came about because she had just taken a break in Bavaria for a few days anyway. "We were in the Allgäu with the family. My dad stayed there because my sister was playing in the regional league. Mom is with me." She wanted to keep to the rhythm: two weeks of golf and then another week off. She could "make good use of the DGL match day in Munich to try out a few things".
Helen Briem is currently ranked number 82 in the world, making her the second-best German behind Olympic silver medal winner Esther Henseleit. It is rare to see a top 100 player in the DGL. All the greater was the number of spectators who came along with the national player to experience top golf up close. Many golf fans did not miss the chance, especially as the 19-year-old from Nürtingen recently achieved three top ten results on the Ladies European Tour (LET) (5th place at the Jabra Ladies Open in France, second place in Tenerife and fourth place in Belgium). Helen Briem has arrived at the top of the European game. She is ranked fifth in the Order of Merit.
And the long-hitter is not running out of tasks. Her home game at the Amundi German Masters at Green Eagle in Winsen near Hamburg is coming up these days. Last year, Helen Briem took part as an amateur and finished a strong eleventh, back then at Seddiner See. "I'm looking forward to it," she says. It will be interesting to see what the try-out at the DGL has brought. Two weeks later, a major is coming up: the Evian Championship in France. Helen Briem will also be there. The calendar is full, so time is a precious factor. Briem: "We managed the practice round before the DGL match day in Munich in the cart in two hours. That was cool." Sometimes things can't go fast enough for her. Not on her way to the top anyway.
