The second match day of the German Golf League (DGL) presented by All4Golf comes to an end with surprises and a thriller. In the 1st Bundesliga South, Munich's men win the duel against the home side from Frankfurt, who are tied on strokes only thanks to the better stroke. In the women's 1st Bundesliga North, the host team from Hanover shone and finished in second place behind champions Hamburg, while Hubbelrath dominated the men's competition in the north.
There were two winners in the women's 1st Bundesliga North on the second DGL match day in Hanover: Champions Hamburg secured full points on their visit to Lower Saxony with a total of +1 ahead of the strong hosts, who were only promoted to the German top flight last year. With +13, Hannover's women finished in second place ahead of Berlin-Wannsee (+17) and picked up important points in the fight against relegation. "We're delighted to have achieved this result in front of our home crowd. It's a bit of a relief, as we always knew we could compete in the top division. We've shown it this time. I'm extremely proud of the girls. The decisive factor was our calm but confident performance," said Hanover coach Joshua Kausche. The ambitious Hubbelrath players, on the other hand, were disappointed and once again had to settle for penultimate place. "We're not where we want to be in the table. The current situation is not good. Our goal for the season was to reach the Final Four. We now have to win matchdays to achieve that," said Hubbelrath's coach Ian Holloway. Next match day: June 7/8 at GC Hösel.
The second DGL match day of the men's 1st Bundesliga North in Hanover was firmly in the hands of GC Hubbelrath. In all three rounds (singles and foursomes on Saturday, singles on Sunday), the Rhinelanders played the best team result and took victory with a total of -28 ahead of GC Hösel (-10) and Hamburg GC (+4). Hubbelrath's coach Alexander Schmitt was in a correspondingly good mood. "We are extremely happy. The match day went very well. It was nice to return to my old place of work and to be able to lead the team around the course. After we got the shot across the bow in Hamburg, it was an intensive two-week preparation for us. We are back." Hösel and Hubbelrath are tied on points in the table, just one point behind Hamburg, which gives hope for an exciting third DGL matchday in Hösel in two weeks' time. "We're very happy with second place, especially as we have our next home fixture. We see ourselves as favorites," said Hösel coach Dawie Stander, whose protégé Thomas Georg Schmidt (65/-6) had the lowest score of the weekend on the card. Next match day: June 7/8 at GC Hösel.
National player Charlotte Back is back from Arizona and in her first DGL appearance in the women's 1st Bundesliga South in 2025, the national player shone with the best round for her team (69/-5). The college player seems to particularly like the challenging course at Frankfurt GC, as she won silver at the IAM there almost exactly two years ago to the day. With St. Leon-Rot, she left little to be desired on Sunday and took victory with a total of -8 ahead of her rivals Stuttgart (+4) and hosts Frankfurt (+16). "We are absolutely on target. We improved our performance on Sunday, especially on the Par-5 holes. We made the right adjustments. Our squad will be complete again next week. However, we won't be able to draw from the full squad, as six athletes are preparing for the British and we have to keep an eye on load management," said SLR coach Sebastian Buhl. Promoted Reichswald (+85) had to do without top player Sara Zrnikova in Frankfurt and once again only finished in fifth place. Next match day: June 7/8 at GC Solitude in Stuttgart.
The second DGL match day in the men's 1st Bundesliga South could hardly have been more exciting. It was not the champions from St. Leon-Rot (+39), who had dominated the competition two weeks earlier, who found themselves in the race for the full five points. At the Frankfurt GC, the host team fought a thriller against the men from the Munich GC, who played strongly in the final round - with the better end for the Bavarians, who prevailed with a total of +17 against the Hessians with the same number of strokes thanks to the better score. "We are over the moon. Things have often gone against us in tight situations in recent years. This time we finally had luck on our side. I'm proud of my boys. They deserve this so much. We really want to get to the Final Four and are now looking forward to matchday three," said Munich coach Arne Dickel. Curious: After the course in Frankfurt, St. Leon-Rot, Frankfurt and Munich are on eight points each. The battle for the Final Four tickets couldn't be more exciting. GC Mannheim-Viernheim (+94) once again only managed fifth place in DGL round two behind promoted Augsburg (+82). Next match day: June 7/8 at GC Augsburg.
After five match days of the German Golf League in the 1st Bundesliga North and South, the two best teams in each season (men's and women's) will qualify for the Final Four. The 2025 German team champions will be determined in match play mode at the GC Munich-Riedhof course on August 2-3.
