What more could a golfer's heart want? The first match day of the German Golf League (DGL) presented by All4Golf takes place in glorious spring weather and on perfectly maintained courses in Hamburg (North) and St. Leon-Rot (South).
There was an exciting three-way battle at the top on the first DGL match day in St. Leon-Rot. In the end, the host team came out on top with a total score of +16 against their rivals from Stuttgart (+21) and Frankfurt (+25). "We fulfilled our compulsory task. My girls put a lot of training content into practice. But as you can see from the result, there were some things they didn't," said SLR coach Sebastian Buhl. He will analyze the game with the players in the coming days and make the necessary adjustments for the next rounds. Second-placed Stuttgart were just as satisfied. "We're happy to take four points. We know how difficult it is to beat SLR at home. It was our turn and we'll take the win on the day in Frankfurt in two weeks' time. We already won there last year," says Solitude coach Heiko Burkhard. Fourth place at the opener in St. Leon-Rot goes to the ladies from Munich GC (+48) ahead of promoted GC am Reichswald (+95). Next match day: May 24/25 at Frankfurt GC.
Who can stop GC St. Leon-Rot in the men's 1st Bundesliga South? New coach Benjamin Schlichting's team still had to do without regulars such as Tim Wiedemeyer and Finn Kölle at the DGL home opener. Instead, a number of young debutants got to play - and they showed what potential this team has. "We are very satisfied. Everyone was focused, especially as the pitch was a bit more difficult on Sunday. The way we presented ourselves at home makes me proud," said Schlichting. Champions SLR came out on top with a total of -36 and 55 strokes ahead of Frankfurter GC (+19) and Münchener GC (+22). In contrast, the first DGL match day was disappointing for the completely newly formed team from GC Mannheim-Viernheim, who finished in last place with +93 behind promoted Augsburg (+51). "Everyone has to be merciless with themselves. That was not what we had in mind. The team can do more," said Mannheim coach Michael Wolf, soberly summarizing the season opener. Next match day: May 24/25 at Frankfurt GC.
The reigning champions from Hamburg were considered the favorites for the women's league opener at home. But they were not to live up to this role. The women from Falkenstein had to settle for second place with their new coach Luis Schmid and a total of +45. The day's victory went to the strong golfers from the capital. G&LC Berlin-Wannsee had missed out on the Final Four in 2024. The coach and players managed to turn their disappointment into motivation and strolled to triumph on the Elbe at the start of the 1st Bundesliga North with a total of +16. "Last year wasn't a particularly good one for us. That's why we're fired up and really want to get to the Final Four. We did a great job this week; I'm proud of the girls," said Julia Neumann, who played the lowest round on Sunday with a 69 (-2). In the battle for third place, GC Hösel (+53) narrowly beat GC Hubbelrath (+56), which had tour player Sophie Witt on Saturday. Promoted Hannover (+73) had to settle for fifth place, but will have the right to play at home in two weeks' time. Next match day: May 24/25 at GC Hannover.
Perhaps it was the return of the HSV footballers to the German top flight that spurred on the golfers of the Hamburg GC. In any case, Falkenstein's men presented themselves in great form at their home game for the DGL opener and took the day's victory in the best golfing weather with a total of +2 ahead of GLC Berlin-Wannsee (+5) and GC Hösel (+30), who had competed with Tour pro Jannik De Bruyn. "That was a great team performance today. We are really proud of everyone who played. Almost the whole team are HSV fans, so the euphoria certainly helped a bit. There were positive vibes all day. It was a great start to the season for us. It couldn't have been better. We'll keep at it and want to continue like this in Hanover in two weeks' time," said Hamburg captain Christian Niemietz. The men from GC Hubbelrath (+37) had to settle for fourth place on the first match day in the north on a perfectly prepared course in the west of Hamburg, while newly promoted Hannover (+50) finished in fifth place. Next match day: May 24/25 at GC Hannover.
The 2025 season of the German Golf League presented by All4Golf is underway. Matchday one is over. After five rounds in the 1st Bundesliga North and South, the two best teams in each season (men's and women's) will qualify for the Final Four. The 2025 German team champions will be determined in match play mode at the GC München-Riedhof course on August 2-3.
