Visitors to the Ryder Cup on Long Island can look forward not only to world-class golf, but also to a diverse culinary scene. From traditional delis and seafood restaurants to hip bars and small distilleries - there is plenty to discover and enjoy in New York and the surrounding area.
Let's start in the heart of Manhattan, where the Yard House New York is located near the famous Times Square. It is a popular address for burger fans and beer lovers: over 130 beers on tap as well as international classics such as Paulaner and KöPi are available - accompanied by live sports broadcasts on countless screens. Just a few blocks away, on 44th Street, is the cult bar Jimmy's Corner. Once founded by a boxing trainer, it offers an authentic, almost nostalgic New York experience. Between photos of legendary fights, visitors quickly strike up a conversation - provided they leave political discussions out of it. Those who prefer sweet treats should not miss Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken, directly opposite Manhattan. The family business, made famous by the TV series "Cake Boss", offers cakes and pastries that look as spectacular as they taste. There is also a branch right on Times Square - ideal for a spontaneous stopover.
Largely unknown in Germany, Long Island is home to more than 40 wineries as well as breweries and distilleries - and a huge selection of restaurants serving a wide variety of cuisines. Long Beach is worth a trip. There you will find the Lido Kosher Deli, a classic among delicatessens. Whether pastrami or corned beef sandwiches - the "overstuffed sandwiches" are a culinary experience. They are served with homemade cole slaw and pickles. On the way to the famous Hamptons, stop off at Lunch Lobster Roll. Right on the way to Montauk Point, at the easternmost tip of Long Island, you can enjoy fresh oysters and legendary lobster sandwiches under blue rain vines. A perfect combination of coastal flair and gourmet enjoyment.
Nicky's Clam Bar in Bay Shore, just 20 minutes from Bethpage, is just as maritime. Opposite the small harbor, it serves shrimp, lobster and fish dishes - classic American, uncomplicated and freshly caught.
Anyone interested in wine, beer or spirits should not leave Long Island without visiting at least one of the small batch wineries. The Channing Daughters Winery in Bridgehampton, one of the few wineries in the southern part of the island, is particularly charming. The blends range from classic Chardonnay to orange-colored natural wines - stylishly served in custom-made glass holders right in front of the vineyards. For lovers of sparkling delights, we recommend a detour to Sparkling Point Winery in Southold. Here, high-quality sparkling wines are produced according to the Méthode Champenoise - with grape varieties that are also used in Champagne. Reservations are advisable during the Ryder Cup. Those who prefer craft beer to wine will find their happiness at the Lost Farmer Brewery in Mineola, west of Bethpage. In a relaxed atmosphere, you can sample exotic beers and even an authentic Kölsch alongside the classics. A special highlight for whisky and liqueur fans is the Twin Stills Distillery in Northville. In a rustic southern atmosphere on Adirondack chairs, you can sample moonshine in various flavors, brandy, gin and whisky - preferably with a designated driver in your luggage. The Twisted Cow Distillery is somewhat hidden away in a shopping center in East Northport. In addition to classic whisky, it also offers flavored vodkas and its own beer. The cozy tasting room with occasional live music is a nice place to end an eventful day.
Not to be forgotten: the hot dog. In New York City, it is a staple - available on almost every street corner. Most stands rely on sausages from Sabrett, and the unit price is currently three dollars. A snack for in between meals that no visitor should miss.
Whether sweet, salty, down-to-earth or sophisticated - the Ryder Cup on Long Island is not just about golf, but also about indulgence. If you have time, you can sample the region's culinary diversity - and get to know authentic New York and Long Island at its tastiest.
