In the middle of Atlanta, a golf project is rising that not only honors one of golf's greatest personalities, but also sets standards for modern, inclusive and innovative course design: The Bobby Jones Golf Course. Originally opened in 1932 to honor Grand Slam winner Bob "Bobby" Jones, the course experienced ups and downs over the decades - and ultimately became one of the most ambitious revitalization projects in US golf.
The Bobby Jones Golf Course Foundation, supported by over 28 million US dollars in private donations, transformed the dilapidated 18-hole course into a forward-looking golf center. Today, the focus is on an innovative 9-hole reverse design that allows two completely different directions of play, alternating daily: Magnolia and Azalea. Two rounds on the same area - but each with different holes, perspectives and challenges. The greens are large enough to accommodate two Pin positions, while there are no traditional Tee boxes - a deliberate nod to classic Scottish links courses such as the Old Course at St. Andrews. Instead of Rough, short mown grass dominates the landscape, reminiscent of the original version of Augusta National. Eight tee variations (called "levels") per hole ensure that both beginners and scratch golfers get their money's worth. The Azalea course measures between 1,582 and 3,649 yards (approx. 1,446 and 3,336 m), while the slightly longer Magnolia course measures 1,685 to 3,792 yards (approx. 1,541 and 3,467 m) - both designed as Par-36, but with a varied course sequence. Strategic, entertaining and varied - exactly in the spirit of Bobby Jones' golf ethic.
The concept is complemented by first-class training facilities: an extensive driving range, a Himalayan putting green inspired by St. Andrews and the five-hole short course "Cupp Links" - named after designer Bob Cupp, who led the revitalization and passed away in 2016. The Grand Slam Golf Academy as well as the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame and regional PGA organizations have found their home here. It is not just a place to play, but a place that lives and breathes golf.
Bobby Jones' legacy is also preserved in the clubhouse: the "Bobby Jones Room" displays original exhibits from his playing days and links the history of the sport with the place today. Jones is omnipresent in Atlanta - whether at the East Lake Golf Club, the Atlanta Athletic Club or the course named after him. The Bobby Jones Golf Course is therefore more than just a city course. It is a monument, a place of learning and a modern golf project all in one - a prime example of how Traditions and innovation can harmonize in golf. Anyone traveling to Atlanta should definitely play - and experience - this impressive tribute to a legend.
