Keegan Bradley faces a tough decision long before the end of the qualifying phase for the 2025 Ryder Cup in New York. Normally, Ryder Cup captains only have to select players who have not directly qualified for the continental competition a few weeks before the event. But since Bradley's victory at the Travelers Championship on the PGA Tour, he is suddenly more in the spotlight as a potential player than as a captain. Will he become the first "Playing Captain" since Arnold Palmer in 1962? This question poses a real problem of conscience for the current world number seven, a "heavy burden", as he himself admitted when he accepted the position. However, the PGA of America approached him with precisely this idea, which opens the door wide for a historic dual role.
On the pro side, there is a lot to be said for Bradley as a player at the moment. His current form is outstanding, underlined by his second Travelers Championship win since 2023. He is one of the top 10 players in the world and the only American other than Scottie Scheffler with multiple PGA Tour wins in the last twelve months. With his strong performance, particularly in ball striking, he is also well suited to the Bethpage venue. Some argue that the American team has lost depth and Bradley's inclusion would give the team the boost and higher profile needed to recapture the Ryder Cup on home soil. The possibility that he could claim a wildcard for himself is becoming ever more pressing, especially as the current performance of some designated leaders such as Xander Schauffele and Colin Morikawa still leaves a lot to be desired. Modern precedent, such as Tiger Woods' successful role as "Playing Captain" at the 2019 Presidents Cup, underpins the feasibility. In addition, Bradley's experienced assistants such as Jim Furyk could take over a large part of the captaincy duties, as many decisions are already made before the event.
On the other hand, however, there are serious concerns about the dual role of captain and player. This unconventional task for the Ryder Cup could burden Bradley with overwhelming duties. One Sky Sports pundit, Ewen Murray, warned that Bradley's form could suffer due to the demands of captaincy. The dual role could also be a distraction from fully concentrating on captaincy. Bradley himself admitted that he is "desperately trying not to think about it on the pitch". What's more, the PGA of America's decision to choose Bradley as captain is viewed critically by some anyway, and he would face intense media scrutiny and the threat of being made a scapegoat if the US team were to lose. Another hurdle is Bradley's previous stance that he would not select himself via captain's pick so as not to waste one of the "precious" spots. The question of whether he plays or not will probably soon be answered by the results of the upcoming tournaments.
