December has a special show match in store for golf fans: the "Golf Channel Games". In this innovative and dynamic competition format, the two top stars Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler compete as captains of their teams. The event will take place live on December 17 at Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter, Florida, and will be broadcast in the USA on the Golf Channel and USA Network in prime time.
The event was conceived as a fresh approach to golf, inspired by All-Star games or the NFL Combine. Instead of a traditional counting game or hole play format, the focus is on skill, strategy and time pressure. The two captains, McIlroy and Scheffler, each lead a team of four through a series of unique challenges.
The "Golf Channel Games" consist of four special competition modules that present players with new challenges:
Some formats are already familiar from the DP World Tour. For example, the "14-Club Challenge" has already been held several times between different players. McIlroy also has experience of this.
Both McIlroy and Scheffler are enthusiastic about the innovative format. Rory McIlroy emphasized that the games offer a "fresh approach to golf" and give players the opportunity to showcase their skills in "unique challenges". Scottie Scheffler is also looking forward to the event: "The 'Golf Channel Games' will be a great mix of skill, strategy and pressure. This will be a brand new way for players and fans to experience golf."
Further details on the remaining six team members will be announced in the coming weeks.
