Tiger Woods will not captain the US team at the 2027 Ryder Cup in Adare Manor. Following a car accident and his brief arrest, the icon has withdrawn completely from the public eye for the time being. The PGA of America now faces the mammoth task of planning for the duel in Ireland without its biggest star.
What was planned as a quiet weekend in Florida ended in a personal disaster for Tiger Woods. On March 27, the 50-year-old caused a car accident in Jupiter Island in which the 15-time major winner's car flipped onto its side. Although Tiger Woods was largely uninjured physically, the legal consequences were serious: the police arrested the 50-year-old on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI).
According to the police report, two white pills were found during a search of the vehicle, which were identified as the opioid hydrocodone. Reports of a "lethargic state" and "severely dilated pupils" paint a worrying picture of the golf legend's state of health. In an initial reaction, Tiger Woods pleaded "not guilty" through his lawyers, but at the same time announced that he would go to a specialized clinic for inpatient treatment.

The extent of this personal crisis became official on Wednesday: the PGA of America officially confirmed that Tiger Woods has declined the captaincy for the 2027 Ryder Cup. In an emotional statement, the association said: "We respect Tiger for prioritizing his long-term health and admire the courage it takes to make such a personal decision. Tiger has informed us that he will not captain the 2027 US Ryder Cup team and we fully support his decision."
Tiger Woods' withdrawal is a bitter blow for the organization. He has been the face of the US team since his debut in 1997. Nevertheless, the PGA emphasizes that they are "in his thoughts and prayers" and hope for his "strength and recovery".

One notable detail in the Tiger Woods case is the court's permission to leave the USA for treatment. His lawyer Douglas Duncan emphasized that the golf star's privacy had been repeatedly violated in the USA, which was massively hindering the healing process. An "intensive, highly individualized program" outside the reach of the US media is now the only option to allow Tiger Woods the necessary rest for his rehabilitation.
Tiger Woods' withdrawal puts the USA under pressure in sporting terms. While Team Europe is relying on the continuity of captain Luke Donald for the third time in a row, uncertainty now prevails in the US camp. Expert and former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley expressed his skepticism about a Tiger Woods comeback on Sky Sport UK: "It is highly unlikely that he will ever win another tournament, let alone a major."
Names such as Stewart Cink, Webb Simpson and the experienced Steve Stricker are now in the rumor mill for the successor. Even a return of Keegan Bradley or an outside chance for LIV returnee Phil Mickelson are being discussed.
