The golf world is holding its breath: Tiger Woods has spoken out in person for the first time following his serious car accident last week. In his statement, the sporting icon announced an indefinite withdrawal in order to seek treatment. It is now clear that the 2026 Masters will take place without its five-time champion.
After a few days of silence surrounding the 15-time major winner, there is now sad certainty. Tiger Woods announced via his social channels that he would be withdrawing completely from the public eye for the time being. "I know and understand the gravity of the situation I find myself in today," explained Tiger Woods in his statement. "I am stepping back for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary so that I can prioritize my well-being and work towards a lasting recovery."
Tiger Woods also emphasized that he is determined to return "healthier, stronger and more focused" at a later date. He asked the public for privacy for himself and his loved ones.

The newly released Martin County Sheriff's Office logs paint a disturbing picture of the accident on March 27, 2026. Tiger Woods was driving his SUV on Jupiter Island on Friday afternoon when he attempted to pass a slower-moving truck across a double yellow line. The vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic, hit the truck and overturned onto the driver's side.
Particularly explosive: Tiger Woods told the investigating officers that he had been distracted by his smartphone and operating the radio. First responders had to free the golf star from the wreckage through the passenger window. While the other person involved in the accident was uninjured, the trailer that was hit sustained property damage of around 5,000 US dollars.

The police affidavit describes Tiger Woods' condition immediately after the crash as concerning. The officers noted that Woods had reacted "lethargically and slowly" and was sweating profusely despite the air conditioning running in the patrol car. His eyes were glassy and his pupils were very dilated. He also suffered from persistent hiccups during the entire interrogation.
Although a breath test showed a blood alcohol level of 0.0, the deputies found two pills of the strong opioid hydrocodone in Tiger Woods' trouser pocket. Woods admitted to having taken "some" prescription medication that morning - apparently including medication for high blood pressure, cholesterol and severe pain. Because he refused a urine test, he was additionally charged with disobeying lawful tests.
Tiger Woods' defense has already taken the first legal steps. His lawyer of many years, Douglas Duncan, submitted a written plea of "not guilty" and demanded a trial before a jury. Tiger Woods also waived his right to appear in person at the arraignment scheduled for April. The next crucial court date is scheduled for May 5, 2026.

The impact on the tournament calendar is immense. Masters Chairman Fred Ridley confirmed that Tiger Woods will not be at Augusta next week. This means he will not only miss the sporting action, but also the grand opening of "The Patch" course, which he helped to design, and the prestigious Champions Dinner. However, Ridley emphasized: "His presence will still be felt in Augusta."
The absence of Tiger Woods also leaves a gap in the administration of the PGA Tour. He is suspending his work on the Future Competition Committee and the Tour's Board of Directors until further notice. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp assured him of his full support, calling him "the most influential figure the sports world has ever known".
