PGA Tour professional Beau Hossler is taking an unexpected path: he is the founder of the coffee brand Beaurista. The impetus for this entrepreneurial innovation did not come on the golf course, but during a break in Costa Rica, inspired by an ayahuasca ceremony.
Hossler was looking for a balance to the intense and often lonely life of a professional golfer. Five years ago, he found coffee to be a welcome distraction and a "refuge" while traveling. "It kind of became my refuge on the road from our crazy lifestyle of sitting on the golf course all day," explained Hossler. But it was a feeling of inner emptiness earlier this year - "something's not right, I just don't feel great" - that led him to the turning point.
Having failed to qualify for the Masters, Hossler used the week off for a self-discovery trip to Costa Rica to take ayahuasca. Ayahuasca is a psychoactive potion made from plants that is traditionally used in shamanic ceremonies in South America and can trigger powerful hallucinations and deep introspective experiences. The intense experience led to a profound self-awareness and a new perspective on his career.
The most important realization: he loves golf and will continue to work to be successful, but he needs a second leg to stand on. "I think I just realized that I love golf, I'm going to be damn good at golf, but my mind needs to be challenged in other ways. I need to be more well-rounded, and honestly, I think that's going to help my golf." This clarity led directly to the creation of Beaurista. Hossler is keen to point out that this is not a licensing business, but a personal commitment: "It's real, it's not a joke... I literally labeled all the bags myself, stamped them all myself. I do it. All of it..."
