Miyu Yamashita wins the AIG Women's Open in Porthcawl, Wales. The Japanese player left nothing to be desired in her start-to-finish victory on Sunday, taking a two-shot lead into the clubhouse with an overall score of eleven under Par. Her compatriot Minami Katsu and England's Charley Hull finished in second place. The highly rated Lottie Woad is tied eighth. The best German player at the Ladies European Tour and LPGA Tour major tournament is Esther Henseleit in 23rd place.
This is the first major international title for Yamashita, who has mainly competed on the LPGA Tour of Japan to date. She qualified for the LPGA Tour via the Q-School just a year ago. "It's been my goal since I was a child to win a major tournament and to have done it now is a very satisfying feeling, something very special," said Yamashita in the press conference after her victory. "This was my goal, something I've been working towards all my life, a dream so to speak. It's the result of hard work every single day, changes and improvements, and the fact that I've done it now and can call myself champion is very special." The 24-year-old, who celebrated her birthday on the Saturday of the tournament, will receive almost 1.5 million dollars for her victory at the Women's Open 2025.
Esther Henseleit once again underlined her claim to be one of the world's best with a tie for 23rd place. However, the Hamburg native dropped five places on the final day as she brought a 74 (+2) into the clubhouse in windy conditions. Laura Fünfstück, who was still in the top 5 after the first round, dropped back to 67th place as the tournament progressed. Emma Spitz from Austria, who was also part of the top group at times, finished the Women's Open in T55.
Mimi Rhodes hit the shot of the tournament on Sunday. The Englishwoman holed her tee shot on hole 5, a Par-3. A hole-in-one alone is something special, but the way this ace came about was extraordinary. Stephanie Kyriacou, Rhodes' playing partner on the final round, had already placed her ball centimetres from the flag when Rhodes took aim at it. Her 8 Iron sent the ball on an almost perfect line towards the hole. But without Kyriacou's preparatory work, he would probably have missed it. It was only thanks to a ricochet off her teammate's ball that her own tool got the direction it needed to fall into the hole in the last few centimetres.
INSANE HOLE-IN-ONE! 🤯
