English professional golfer Tommy Fleetwood won the DP World Tour India Championship at Delhi Golf Club at the weekend, celebrating his eighth career title on Tour. What makes this victory special? It was a perfect blend of strategic club selection, superior Putt performance and a deep personal desire.
The 34-year-old played an impressive final round of 65 (-7) to make up a two-shot deficit and distance himself from Japanese rival Keita Nakajima (20 under Par). The most emotional moment, however, was when Fleetwood's eight-year-old son Frankie stormed onto the 18th green.
"We were playing golf at home last week and he just said, 'You know what you've never done? You've never won a tournament where I've been able to run onto the 18th green,'" fleetwood said after the win. "The whole day I had that in my head: could I put myself in a position to actually make that happen? It's one of those little things that means so much to me. That was really cool. I wanted to make that happen all day."

The secret of Fleetwood's success lay in the intelligent adaptation of his equipment to the unusually tight and relatively short course (6,912 yards) at Delhi Golf Club. Like 42 percent of the field, Fleetwood dispensed with the Driver. In its place, strategic Woods were used.

While his choice of irons and Woods strategy gave him the precision he needed off the tee and on the way to the green, the Putter was the real winning weapon in the final round. After his putter had disappointed on Saturday, he set off a firework of holed balls on Sunday. Switching to the Spider Tour Black helped Fleetwood find better alignment and an ideal swing arc. This effect, combined with his TP5x pix ball, was crucial in crunch time.
"I putted fantastic today. Really, really fantastic," Fleetwood emphasized. "I played fantastic, and I holed some great putts on the last few holes, so from the middle distance." The key Putt run in the final round was a series of four Birdies in a row - starting at the Par-3 7th hole and ending at the 10th - that turned a two-shot deficit into a two-shot lead. A late 13-foot Putt on the 17th hole also secured the comfortable lead.
In addition to the emotional significance, the victory also has major sporting consequences. Fleetwood, who already won his first PGA Tour title this year (TOUR Championship) and was Europe's top scorer at the Ryder Cup, was still missing a victory on the DP World Tour. He was in danger of missing the final events of the season.
"I feel like with all the good things that have happened this year, a few things have let me down, namely my year on the DP World Tour. Another win feels great." The triumph in India catapults him from 94th to 25th in the Race to Dubai and secures his eligibility for the prestigious season finals in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The success at the Delhi Golf Club marks the end of his most remarkable season.
