2026 Solheim Cup: How the Format Works

The Solheim Cup is not played as a traditional stroke play competition, but rather as match play. Therefore, the total number of strokes over the entire round does not count. What matters is which team wins more individual holes.

A total of 28 points are awarded at the Solheim Cup:

• Friday: four foursomes and four fourballs
• Saturday: four foursomes and four fourballs
• Sunday: twelve singles
• A won match earns one point.
• In the event of a tie, both teams receive half a point each.

Team Europe needs 14.5 points to reclaim the Solheim Cup. As the defending champion, Team USA only needs a 14-14 tie to retain the trophy.

Foursomes: Classic four-ball format

Foursomes are played on Friday and Saturday mornings. Two players form a team and play together using only one ball. They take turns hitting the ball: After the first player tees off, her partner takes the next shot, followed by the first player again.

Tee shots are also divided. One player tees off on the even-numbered holes, the other on the odd-numbered ones. After that, both players take turns hitting the ball until it is holed.

This format requires a great deal of coordination and trust. An unfortunate shot directly affects the entire pair. At the same time, well-coordinated teams can gain decisive advantages through smart decisions and mutual confidence.

Fourballs: Four balls and aggressive match play duels

The fourballs take place on Friday and Saturday afternoons. Each of the four players plays her own ball. At the end of each hole, only the better score of the two partners counts for each team.

For example, if one player shoots a Birdie and her partner shoots a Par, the Birdie counts toward the team’s score. This allows the players to take a more aggressive approach: one partner can take risks, while the other’s score serves as a safety net.

Fourballs therefore often result in many Birdies and quick turnarounds. A team can win a hole even if only one of the two players achieves the better score.

Singles: Sunday’s Grand Finale

On Sunday, all twelve players from Team Europe and Team USA will face off in singles matches. Each player will compete directly against an opponent from the other team.

In the singles, too, holes are scored one by one. Whoever has won more holes after a maximum of 18 holes earns a point for her team. If a match is tied after 18 holes, the point is split.

The twelve singles matches could still turn the entire Solheim Cup around. Even a significant deficit after the first two days is therefore not necessarily decisive. Conversely, Team USA can secure its lead as the defending champion on Sunday with every match it wins.
