The Scoring System: Who Will Win the Solheim Cup?

Each individual match is worth exactly one point. If both sides tie after 18 holes, the match is “halved,” and each team receives half a point. There is no playoff at the end of the round. In the match play format, the goal is to win individual holes. If one side takes fewer strokes on a hole than their opponents, they win that hole. The team that has won more holes at the end of the match earns a point.

• Victory for Europe: Team Europe needs at least 14.5 points to reclaim the trophy.
• Team USA Defends Its Title: Since Team USA won the 2024 Solheim Cup, the Americans need only 14 points in 2026 to tie and retain the trophy.

The Three Solheim Cup Match Formats in Detail

Captains Anna Nordqvist (Europe) and Angela Stanford (USA) must make tactical decisions over the first two days to determine which pairings work best together. On the final day of the Solheim Cup, all 24 players will take the course. A total of three different formats are used:

2026 Solheim Cup: Here’s Team Europe’s roster.

1. Foursomes: Teamwork and Mental Toughness

When? Friday and Saturday mornings (4 matches each). Foursomes are considered the most challenging discipline in golf.

• The format: Two players per team play with a single ball.
• Alternating shots: Player A tees off, Player B takes the second shot, A the third, and so on.
• Tee-off rotation: The players take turns teeing off—one plays the even-numbered holes, the other the odd-numbered ones. Special feature: Since players must continue play from where their partner left the ball, this Solheim Cup format requires extreme trust and coordination.

2. Fourball: Offensive showdowns and plenty of Birdies

When? Friday and Saturday afternoons (4 matches each). Unlike the foursome, the fourball (often called best ball) is designed for maximum aggression.

• The format: All four players in a flight play their own ball throughout the entire hole. This means there are four balls in play at the same time.
• Scoring: At the end of each hole, only the best score of the two partners on a team counts. Special feature: Since one partner acts as a “safety net,” the players can take full risks to improve their team’s Solheim Cup score.

3. Singles Matches: The Grand Finale on Sunday

When? On the final day of the tournament, 12 singles matches take place. On Sunday, each player is on her own. All 12 members of Team Europe and Team USA compete in direct one-on-one matchups.

• The format: Whoever has won more holes at the end of the 18 holes earns a full point for their team’s tally. Special feature: Sunday’s singles matches often deliver the most dramatic moments, as the Solheim Cup leaderboard can change by the second and the pressure on individual players is at its highest.

Match Play Terminology: Terms You Should Know

To help you follow the Solheim Cup live scoring or TV broadcast more effectively, here’s a look at some key terms:

• All Square (AS): The match is tied.
• X Up (e.g., 3 Up): One team leads by a margin of three holes won.
• X and Y (e.g., 4 & 3): The match ends early. “4 & 3” means that a player leads by 4 holes while only 3 remain to be played.
• Dormie: A player leads by exactly as many holes as remain to be played. In this case, the match can no longer be lost—it can only be tied.

With this knowledge of the Solheim Cup rules, you’re well-prepared for the sporting highlight of 2026. Whether you’re there in person at Bernardus Golf or watching via the Solheim Cup live stream—match play promises pure golfing excitement.
