Rory McIlroy has achieved the impossible: with a nerve-racking title defense at the US Masters 2026, he secured his second Green Jacket in a row and his sixth major title. However, his success in Augusta was not only down to sheer willpower, but also a precisely coordinated arsenal of equipment. We take a look inside the bag that made golf history.
Ironically, the foundation stone for this year's triumph was laid back in early 2025. Back then, Rory McIlroy switched to the TaylorMade TP5 - a decision that, looking back, he describes as crucial to his game at Augusta. With the new 2026 TP5, Rory found the consistency in spin needed to tame the treacherous greens of Augusta National.
Especially on the legendary 12th hole, the heart of "Amen Corner", the confidence paid off. "I knew it was a perfect three-quarter Iron 9," McIlroy explained after the round. The ball allowed him to control the spin precisely instead of running the risk of overshooting the target at full speed.

If there's one statistic that underlines Rory's superiority this week, it's his performance with the Driver - at least in terms of hitting distance. Using the new TaylorMade Qi4D, McIlroy averaged a drive distance of 325 yards - a whopping 21 yards more than the field average. Even though he was still at the bottom of the statistics in terms of accuracy with this club after three rounds, he had always managed to make up for his occasional weakness with the Driver with his Wedges and Irons. In the final round, McIlroy hit significantly more fairways with the Driver again.
The fitting for this club in the fall of 2025 is already considered legendary internally. Adrian Rietveld, Senior Tour Manager at TaylorMade, reports on a session in which Rory only missed his target twice in 30 shots. McIlroy took advantage of this confidence at Augusta: His 350-yard drive on hole 13 on Sunday paved the way for one of the most important Birdies of the tournament. The setup (8.0° loft, Ventus Black 6X shaft) is designed for maximum stability on mishits without sacrificing the familiar trajectory.

Augusta is known for its extremely short mown areas around the greens, the so-called "tight lies". To avoid making any mistakes here, Rory adapted his wedge setup specifically. He switched to MG5 wedges, bending his 60° lob wedge to 61° loft.
This extra degree of loft minimally increases the "sit point" of the leading edge. As a result, the Wedge glides more cleanly through the grass without catching in the ground - a crucial factor in the up-and-downs that kept Rory in the game on the final Sunday. The new Spin Tread technology also provided consistent friction, even in the changeable weather of the tournament days.
While power reigned on the Fairways, the Masters was decided on the greens. McIlroy has been relying on the Spider Tour X (short slant) since the end of the 2024 season. With a 30-degree "toe slope", this Putt is a perfect match for Rory's moderately arcing swing motion. James Holley from TaylorMade emphasizes that Rory needs the feeling that the clubface opens up in the backswing and actively closes in the follow-through. You could feel this confidence on Sunday: even when the drive on 18 landed in the pine needles, Rory remained calm and holed in two putts to win.
