While players at the Wyndham Championship were battling for the last opportunity to qualify for PGA Tour playoff tournaments, Scottie Scheffler was enjoying a weekend off. And yet he earned more than all those who were still trying to improve their position in the FedExCup Playoffs. The reason for this is a so-called bonus pool, which is paid out after the end of the PGA Tour regular season. The leader in the standings received a whopping 18 million dollars.
Scheffler didn't even need to compete in the final tournament of the regular PGA Tour season, such was his lead in the FedExCup. The Open winner, who won his fourth Major title a few weeks ago, was already the leader in the season standings before the Wyndham Championship. After two Major victories and two further titles this year, the world number one has cemented his supremacy. He has now been rewarded with ten million dollars as the best player of the regular season. Tour sponsor Comcast, which has a separate ranking list based on the same criteria, paid him a further eight million. This meant a total of 18 million dollars for the 29-year-old, who didn't have to hit a single shot, at least in the last week.
Rory McIlroy also earned a lot, although he did not compete in the Wyndham Championship either. The runner-up in both rankings also received a princely bonus totaling ten million dollars. In the regular PGA Tour season, he had earned more than 16 million dollars with his success at the Masters in April and two further victories. It was also payday for Sepp Straka from Vienna. The Austrian is third in the rankings and can look forward to a total of six million dollars.
