The PGA Tour season finale will continue without German participation. Stephan Jäger and Matti Schmid missed out on a top placing at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and are no longer allowed to take part in the last two events of the FedExCup Playoffs. Only the top 50 finishers in the PGA Tour's season ranking, the FedExCup, are still allowed to play after the first playoff tournament. Jäger and Schmid, 60th and 67th in the rankings respectively, will miss out on this opportunity, although they are in prominent company. Jordan Spieth and Tony Finau also failed to qualify for the BMW Championship, the penultimate tournament of the PGA Tour season.
Other players still managed to break into the top 50: Rickie Fowler moved up from 64th to 48th thanks to his eighth place at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Qualifying for the second of the three play-off events not only brings with it the chance to win big prize money, but also guarantees participation in the exclusive and lucrative "Elevated Events" in the coming season. Jäger and Schmid are guaranteed a full Tour card.

While others were fighting for a place in the top 50, Justin Rose had bigger things on his mind. The Englishman defeated US Open winner J.J. Spaun in the play-off for victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship with a Birdie on the third extra hole. The 45-year-old had played his way into the shared lead on Sunday with numerous Birdies on the back nine and was then superior in the play-off. After Vijay Singh, he is now the second oldest player ever to win a FedExCup Playoffs tournament.
"That's why I practice. That's why I play," said Rose, delighted with his success. "If I play my best, I know I'm good enough to play, compete and now win against the best players in the world. A very pleasing day for me, where my hard work has paid off." Compatriot Tommy Fleetwood, who finished third, also had nothing but praise for the winner: "I admire his commitment. I really do," said Fleetwood, who is still waiting for his first PGA Tour victory. "At 45, he's not slowing down at all. He keeps doing what he's doing. He's still very fit, very healthy and very motivated. I think, yes, he's a great personality in golf to look up to."
The FedExCup continues with the BMW Championship. The season finale will then take place at the Tour Championship.
