When thinking of golf in the Netherlands, a specific image often comes to mind: flat landscapes, small canals, plenty of wind, and the obligatory windmill on the horizon. The Kagerzoom Golf Club embodies this cliché in the most charming way. It impressively demonstrates that a 9-hole course can offer a sporting challenge that overshadows many an 18-hole championship course.
A glance at the scorecard immediately reveals Kagerzoom's focus on flexibility: an incredible six tee boxes are available per hole. Depending on your choice, the total length of a round varies between 1,708 and 2,870 meters. But the numbers are deceiving: the constantly blowing coastal wind often makes the holes play significantly longer than the signs suggest.
Here you will find numerous other travel reports from the world's most beautiful golf courses.
Even the walk to the first tee is an experience: you cross one of the many waterways via one of those typical small bridges that define the landscape. The first hole, a par-4 measuring up to 395 meters, immediately sets the tone: a right-hand dogleg that plays enormously long into a headwind. Aiming too far left here inevitably lands you in the water, which accompanies almost every hole on the course.
Although the second hole is only a short par-3 at a maximum of 117 meters, the green is almost completely surrounded by water. A precise tee shot is crucial here. Anyone who finds the saving bunker to the right of the green must attempt a sand shot towards the glistening water – a true test of nerves for any amateur golfer.
Towards the end of the round, the course shows its teeth once more. The eighth hole, a gentle par-5 dogleg to the right, gives the feeling of hitting the ball directly out of the water. The element accompanies the hole almost all the way to the green, while obstacles also lurk on the left side about 100 meters from the target – a defensive strategy is a must here.
The ninth hole provides a crowning finish, a par-4 running almost at a 90-degree angle. A prominent hill in the drive's landing zone often causes balls to settle in unexpected positions. The slightly elevated green with its two tiers demands full concentration until the final putt, and the bunker with its raised lip on the left side should definitely be avoided.
The Kagerzoom Golf Club is the ideal destination for golfers who either have little time or want to test their strategic game in windy conditions. The excellent service at the reception and the superb course maintenance complete the experience.
