There are golf courses you play, and then there are those you experience. Old Head Golf Links in County Cork, Southern Ireland, undoubtedly falls into the latter category. Perched on a prominent headland that stretches about three kilometers into the Atlantic, this course regularly appears on lists of the world's most spectacular venues. Those who tee off here find themselves on approximately 55 hectares of land almost entirely surrounded by the roaring sea – a backdrop that inspires awe even in well-traveled professionals.
Even the drive to the clubhouse offers breathtaking views of the steep cliffs. The par-72 course is a masterpiece of nature: on a total of nine holes, you play directly along the cliff edge. With five par-5s, five par-3s, and eight par-4s, the layout offers a varied rhythm. Thanks to its five different tee boxes, the course is flexible: while it presents itself as a true monster from the back tees at 7,120 yards, it is also playable for higher handicappers from the front (5,458 yards) – provided their nerves hold up.
Here you will find many more travel reports from the world's most beautiful golf courses.
Old Head is a pure "walking course." For first-time visitors, it is highly advisable to book one of the approximately 160 experienced caddies. They are not only guides but also indispensable advisors on club selection when the wind affects ball flight.
A particular highlight is the fourth hole, the "Lighthouse" hole. Here you play directly towards the iconic lighthouse, while to the left, the cliffs drop hundreds of meters. The twelfth hole, a par-5, demands a heroic tee shot over a bay. Anyone who fails to make the carry here irrevocably surrenders their ball to the ocean.
The greens at Old Head are known for their excellent quality but present an optical challenge: many players fall victim to an illusion and expect breaks on the wrong side. Here, a caddy's expertise truly pays off.
The finale on the 18th hole eventually leads players back towards the clubhouse. The par-4 (dogleg left), up to 434 yards long, plays steadily slightly uphill. Since the green is elevated, distance control on the approach shot is crucial: balls hit too short will inevitably roll back down the hill.
A visit to Old Head Golf Links is an all-encompassing experience. Those who wish can stay at the accompanying boutique hotel, which is often booked far in advance. The service begins right in the car park and concludes on the clubhouse terrace, where you can enjoy a pint of Guinness while gazing at the lighthouse. The course is a physical and mental challenge, but the combination of dramatic design and the elements makes it an absolute "must-play."
