The Batalha Golf Club, located on the rugged north coast of the Azorean island of São Miguel, presents itself as a majestic counterpart to Europe's classic parkland courses. It combines sea, wind, and volcanic rock on a course that breathes the spirit of traditional links golf. Just a few kilometers from the island capital Ponta Delgada, the 27-hole course, opened in 1993 and designed by Cameron & Powell, stretches across a windswept high plateau above the Atlantic.
The layout is characterized by wide horizons and the ubiquitous historic lava stone walls, the so-called "Currais". These once protected grapevines from the elements and today mercilessly swallow imprecise shots. For ambitious golfers, the combination of rounds from the Louro Loop (Course C) and the Eucalipto Course (Course A) is considered the ultimate challenge.
Here you will find numerous other travel reports from the most beautiful golf courses in the world.
The Louro Loop demands utmost concentration from the start. Already on the second hole, a steadily uphill par-5 measuring 440 meters, players are challenged by the left-sloping terrain and the heavily undulating, elevated greens.
The watery element takes center stage on holes 4 and 5: While on the 4th, a lateral pond dramatically narrows the fairway in the landing zone, the subsequent par-3 requires a precise carry shot from tees built like a pier directly into the water. The round concludes with a mighty, 513-meter par-5, whose undulating fairway demands precise layups.
While the Eucalipto Course may appear more open and offer wider fairways, it demands noticeably more length. The very first hole captivates golfers with a 478-meter par-5, where a crater-like bunker landscape and two ponds must be carried from the elevated tee. A true monster of a hole awaits on the 4th, a 559-meter par-5 that plays as a sharp 90-degree dogleg to the left.
The sixth hole is considered a scenic and sporting highlight, a 401-meter par-4 (the course's handicap 1). Here, the path from the tee first leads steeply downhill into a hollow and then requires a challenging uphill approach shot to a highly elevated green, whose extremely high bunker edges demand absolutely flawless play.
A round on this course is like a rollercoaster ride, intensified by the unique play of light in the Azores. Due to rapid cloud movements, the scenery changes every ten minutes between a vibrant emerald green and the somber presence of dark volcanic rock. Whoever plays the Batalha Golf Club will find one of Portugal's best courses, which, even on busy days, conveys the feeling of being completely alone with the elements.
