The Schloss Weitenburg Golf Club in the district of Tübingen lives up to its slogan "The course by the river". The eponymous castle towers majestically over the Neckar valley, while the 18-hole course is divided into two completely different types of terrain: The first six holes run through partly steep hilly terrain with blind teeshots, slopes and strategically placed planting - a clear contrast to the flat, water-dominated courses along the Neckar from hole 7 onwards. The course, conceived by renowned designer Heinz Fehring, follows the principle of natural course architecture: no artificial topography, but a layout that adapts to the terrain. This creates exciting challenges without appearing artificial. The par distribution - par-34 on the front nine, par-38 on the back nine - underlines the architectural diversity. Four Par-3s on the first nine holes, including a charming 101-meter hole, demand precision and flair. The second half, on the other hand, offers more length, three par-5s and significantly more water contact.
Even the start is unusual: after a short drive from the clubhouse to the first hole, players can expect an uphill dogleg with a laterally sloping Fairway - the theme of slopes runs through the first six holes. Partly concealed greens, double levels, ingenious bunker positions and sloping putting lines provide excitement and demand tactical play. The first Par-5 on hole 6 is particularly exciting with its right-hand slope and blind shot into the green. The scenery changes abruptly from the seventh hole onwards: the course descends into the Neckar valley, where the fairways are flat but characterized by numerous water hazards. The Neckar is crossed a total of five times. Fairway 10 in particular, with a ditch separating the fairway, and fairway 11, a 429-metre Par-4 with ponds and changes of direction, demonstrate the challenging design of this half of the course. The final Par-5 with a dogleg right, pond in front of the green and strategically placed planting also demands full concentration right up to the last Putt.
The maintenance of the course is excellent, the greens true and fast, the Fairways neatly mowed - ideal conditions for ambitious players. By the way, dogs are welcome, which underlines the familiar and open character of the club. A cart or e-trolley is recommended on the first few holes, while the flat second half can easily be done on foot. Golfclub Schloss Weitenburg offers a varied, architecturally successful golf experience with a high recognition value. The combination of castle backdrop, proximity to the Neckar, natural design and variety of play makes this course a highlight in southern Germany - for strategists, aesthetes and adventurers alike.
