If you play golf on the Costa Brava, you can't miss Golf de Pals. Opened in 1966, the course is not only the oldest golf course in the region, but also one of the most charming in the whole of Spain. Designed by renowned British architect Fred W. Hawtree, the course combines classic British style with Mediterranean flair - nestled in a centuries-old pine forest, set on gentle, natural dunes. The par-73 course measures around 6,263 meters from the back tees, but can also be played in shorter versions from 5,127 meters.
The first nine holes make it clear that Golf de Pals is not a course for daredevils with long-hitter qualities. Narrow Fairways, dense rows of trees and strategically placed Bunkers demand precise play - especially on the first four holes, which are considered particularly narrow and technically demanding. If you open up here with the Driver, you are taking a high risk. On hole 7, for example, a Par-4 with a dogleg left, the tactical question arises: should you play over the old row of pines in front of the green or should you let the ball roll under the branches? Hole 8, a long Par-5, requires a safe play to the right - a pond awaits on the left. And on the 9th, a Par-3 with a frontal water hazard, a pond separates the green from the player - the target is not only visually intimidating, but also challenging from a technical point of view, as the green hangs heavily forward.
The characteristics of the course change noticeably on the tenth tee. The back nine opens up, the layout becomes wider, the holes longer - this is where the long hitters finally get their money's worth. Three Par-5s and generously cut greens make it possible to get the Driver out of the bag. Holes 13 to 18 are particularly impressive with their parkland-like character: wide fairways, picturesquely embedded in the landscape, allow for controlled power shots. However, the greens are anything but easy - undulating, large and technically demanding, they challenge every aspect of the short game.
In addition to its architectural quality, Golf de Pals has also made sporting history: in 1972, the course hosted the first Open de España on the European Tour. To this day, national and international tournaments are held regularly - proof of the high sporting standard of the course. Despite its importance, the club remains pleasantly down-to-earth: The game takes center stage, not prestige. Golf de Pals is a perfect blend of Traditions, technique and Mediterranean serenity. The challenging front nine demands strategic thinking, while the open back nine rewards good course management and length. The course is ideal for golfers who want to combine challenge and beauty. Golf de Pals - a real gem on the Costa Brava.
