In the heart of Tuscany, near Siena, Robert Trent Jones Jr. has conjured up a course in the landscape for La Bagnaia Golf Resort that impresses with both its design and the level of maintenance. Like the landscape around the resort, the course with its 18 holes stretches gently over the hills of Tuscany, with cypress trees along the fairways. In the background, the hilly landscape also forms a perfect panorama. The golf course is also open to non-resort guests and the course, also known as Royal Golf La Bagnaia, is also very dog-friendly.
The course, which is part of the IMG Prestige network, plays a maximum of 6,100 meters as a Par-71, so you should pay attention to which of the four tee boxes is best suited to your own game. As the course is embedded in the hilly landscape, there are often slopes on the round, and the differences in elevation along the course should also be taken into account when choosing a club - and many golfers like to use a cart, especially on warm days. The play with the landscape can be seen directly on the first Par-3 on hole 2, which is played slightly downhill over a hollow - and as usual with Trent Jones, not only green bunkers but also a small stream lurk on the way to the flag. Before teeing off on hole 3, you should first enjoy the wonderful view of the landscape and the course before tackling the rather short Par-5 dogleg left downhill with water on the left. The clear dogleg left on hole 8 is also exciting, with two tall trees blocking the way to the clearly elevated green. The ninth hole, with its significant ascent in the second part, also provides further excitement at the end of the front nine.
The back nine is initially downhill again, and you shouldn't start too aggressively on the 10th. Water comes into play more and more frequently, so good course management is more important than pure length, and the differences in altitude on holes 12 to 16 present golfers with some tricky decisions. After the last Par-3 on the fairway, Trent Jones sets the final chord: the 18th fairway towards the clubhouse, an uphill Par-5 up to 521 meters long. Here you not only need a precise teeshot and good lay-up, but also encounter an elevated green that is offset to the right. If you manage a par here, always under the critical gaze of the guests on the clubhouse terrace, you will be more than happy to move on to hole 19 and be rewarded.
The Golf Resort La Bagnaia not only offers the finest golf, but also very nice accommodation, which is connected to the golf course by shuttle. Only bed and breakfast is offered, but the excellent restaurant in the clubhouse is available for other meals in the immediate vicinity. The resort's location near Siena also makes it an ideal base for exploring Tuscany - after all, this famous region in Italy not only offers culture and historic cities, but also a variety of culinary delights including truffles.
