TaylorMade presents the latest generation of P790 irons—already the fifth in the “Players Distance” line. This club series, one of TaylorMade’s most successful, combines the look and feel of a classic players’ iron with the Performance and forgiveness of modern technology. They are designed for a broad range of golfers—from ambitious amateurs to Tour pros—who are looking for a versatile iron that offers both distance and accuracy. Thanks to a variety of shaft options, they are designed to appeal to golfers with different swing speeds.
The TaylorMade P790 irons feature a number of technical innovations designed to improve performance:
New face material: The new face, made of 4340M steel, is said to be 20% stronger than the material used in the previous generation. This is designed to enable a thinner, faster face, which could lead to higher ball speed and longer carry distances. TaylorMade also claims a sweet spot that’s up to 24% larger compared to the previous model.
FLTD CG (Flighted Center of Gravity): A key feature of the P790 irons is the FLTD CG™ system. This involves strategically placing a tungsten weight within each iron head to tailor the club’s center of gravity to the specific shot. In the long irons (3–5), the center of gravity is low and far back, which is designed to facilitate an easier launch and provide more forgiveness. In the mid-irons (6–7), the weight shifts slightly forward and upward, which is intended to increase stability and improve distance control. In the short irons (8–PW), the center of gravity is higher and further forward, which is designed to provide more spin and precision for approach shots.
Thick-Thin Back Wall Construction: The "Thick-Thin Back Wall Construction" with honeycomb cutouts is another weight-reduction technology. Cutouts on the back of the clubhead reduce weight and place it deeper within the head, which is designed to increase the moment of inertia (MOI) and provide greater stability.
Thru-Slot Speed Pocket: The “Thru-Slot Speed Pocket™” in the 4–7 irons is a slot in the sole of the club designed to increase the flexibility of the face and enlarge the sweet spot. This is designed to maintain ball speed and distance even on off-center hits.
SpeedFoam Air: The hollow construction of the P790 irons is filled with SpeedFoam™ Air, an ultra-lightweight foam designed to dampen vibrations and create a comfortable feel at impact.
Visually, the TaylorMade P790 irons are designed to resemble "Players irons." The topline is very slim and narrow, giving the irons an elegant look. Overall, there are few edges and angles on the clubhead, resulting in a very clean design with many smooth surfaces. At address, the irons look very sporty. The sole, however, is relatively thick, which enhances playability and forgiveness. The irons feature a matte “Tour Satin Scratch Finish.” The P790 logo is now centered on the back of the clubhead and is no longer located on the heel, as it was on previous models.
