The TaylorMade Spider ZT is the latest addition to TaylorMade's successful line of putters. It aims to improve the stability and consistency of your putts. The abbreviation "ZT" stands for "Zero Torque", a concept designed to minimize the twisting of the Putter during the swing.
The core principle of the Spider ZT Putter is the aforementioned "Zero Torque" philosophy. This is achieved through a design with a "toe-up" or "face-forward" setting, i.e. the weight distribution is adapted to the swing. The effect is that the clubface remains better aligned with the target throughout the putting motion. This reduces the need for golfers to manipulate their hands or wrists to keep the clubface straight, which should result in a smoother and more controlled putt.
The Putter uses a blend of materials, including stainless steel in the face and aluminum in the back, to achieve a high moment of inertia (MOI). A high MOI means that the Putt is more resistant to twisting on off-center hits. This leads to a higher margin of error and helps to keep the ball speed and direction constant even on sub-optimal hits.
Extreme weights are placed on the outer edge of the Putt, and additional strategically positioned weights provide triangulated center of gravity characteristics. This weight distribution improves the stability of the Putt through the swing and provides better directional stability. The precise placement of the center of gravity (CG) helps keep the clubface straight to the target at impact.
The Putter features an "Onset Hosel" configuration, which places the shaft slightly in front of the clubface. This geometry is designed to promote a consistent stroke motion and help golfers position and align the putter more reliably at address. The sole of the Putter is slightly curved from the heel to the toe. This curvature makes it easier to place the putter on the green and provides further help with more precise alignment. A milled alignment system on the top of the Putter as a visual aid is designed to enable golfers to center the ball precisely and visualize a clear line to the target.
A striking face insert made of Surlyn and aluminum with characteristic 45-degree angle grooves gives the insert its special surface structure. It is designed to set the ball into a fast forward roll immediately after impact, rather than allowing it to slide or bounce. This leads to a more consistent roll speed and improves distance control. In addition, the material and grooves have a positive influence on the feel and sound at impact.
