The TaylorMade Spider ZT is the latest addition to TaylorMade's successful line of putters. It is designed to improve the stability and consistency of your putts. The abbreviation "ZT" stands for "Zero Torque," a concept intended to minimize the putter's rotation during the swing.
The core principle of the Spider ZT putter is this “Zero Torque” philosophy. This is achieved through a design featuring a “toe-up” or “face-forward” alignment, meaning the weight distribution is adapted to the swing. The result is that the clubface remains better aligned with the target throughout the entire Putt stroke. This reduces the need for golfers to adjust their hands or wrists to keep the clubface square, which is intended to lead to a smoother and more controlled Putt.
Zero Torque: Putter Technology Explained Simply – Your Guide to Greater Precision
The Putter uses a combination of materials, including stainless steel in the face and aluminum in the rear section, to achieve a high moment of inertia (MOI). A high MOI means the Putter is more resistant to twisting on off-center strikes. This results in greater forgiveness and helps maintain consistent ball speed and direction even on suboptimal strikes.
Extreme weights are placed along the outer edge of the Putter, and additional, strategically positioned weights provide triangulated center-of-gravity characteristics. This weight distribution improves the Putter’s stability through the swing and ensures better directional stability. The precise placement of the center of gravity (CG) helps ensure that the clubface is square to the target at the moment of impact.
The putter features an “Onset Hosel” configuration, in which the shaft begins slightly in front of the face. This geometry is designed to promote a consistent swing motion and help golfers position and align the putter more reliably at address. The sole of the Putter is slightly curved from heel to toe. This curve makes it easier to place the Putter on the green and provides additional assistance with more precise alignment. A milled alignment system on the top of the Putter serves as a visual aid, designed to help golfers precisely center the ball and visualize a clear line to the target.
A Surlyn and aluminum face insert with distinctive 45-degree angled grooves gives the insert its unique surface texture. It is designed to set the ball on a fast forward roll immediately after impact, rather than letting it skid or bounce. This results in a more consistent roll speed and improves distance control. Additionally, the material and grooves positively influence the feel and sound at impact.
