Rory McIlroy has won the Irish Open on the DP World Tour for the second time in his career. The Masters champion prevailed in a play-off against Joakim Lagergren on the third extra hole. Previously, neither of them had been able to decide a winner thanks to two Birdies each on the first two replays of the 18th hole. However, the Swede sank his ball in the water on his third attempt, opening the door for McIlroy. The Northern Irishman took his chance in front of his home crowd at the K Club and secured his 45th title worldwide.

It took an Eagle on the final hole for McIlroy to seize the opportunity to catch up with Lagergren and save himself for the play-off. The 36-year-old was naturally pleased afterwards: "To achieve what I did at the start of the year and then come home and win my national Open - no matter what happens in the rest of the year, that's a pretty cool year. 2025 is going to be one of the best, if not the best year of my career." But he immediately added: "But we're not done yet, I've got a big week coming up next week at Wentworth and then of course everyone is looking forward to the Ryder Cup."
McIlroy received a good 870,000 euros in prize money for his 20th success on the DP World Tour. He remains at the top of the Race to Dubai, the season ranking of the former European Tour.
The best German player in the field was Jannik de Bruyn, who improved to tied 26th place on the final day. Bernd Wiesberger (Austria) also came into the clubhouse with an overall score of five under Par. Nicolai von Dellingshausen moved up to 37th place and remains the best German in the season rankings in 27th place.
