Callaway is launching a new generation of wedges that are intended to take the short game to a new level. With the Opus SP wedges, which were developed in close collaboration with tour professionals, the golf equipment supplier uses innovative technology to give golfers more spin, control and precision around the green. At the heart of this new racket family is the eponymous Spin Pocket construction.
The term “SP” in Opus SP wedges stands for Spin Pocket technology. This is a novel, two-piece head construction that reinterprets the traditional wedge design. By creating a cavity in the lower area of the club head, the weight saved at this point (between 16.8 and 23.6 grams depending on the loft) can be shifted specifically to a higher position in the club head.
This upward shift in weight has a direct effect on the wedge's center of gravity. The raised center of gravity promotes a flatter ball flight, which is ideal for keeping the ball under the wind in a targeted manner. At the same time, the spin is significantly increased as the racket hits the ball with an optimal angle for maximum backward rotation. This is particularly important for shots from the middle or the lower part of the playing surface, which could otherwise extend beyond the green. With Spin Pocket technology, these balls can stop faster and offer players more control to play tight flag positions more aggressively.
In addition to the groundbreaking Spin Pocket, the playing surface of the new wedges has also been further developed. The Spin Gen 2.0 Face has grooves with a new angle of 17° and a closer distance from each other. This adjustment provides a larger area of contact between ball and hitting surface and helps to stabilize spin from different positions, particularly rough, and results in more consistent behavior.
This is complemented by a deeper, laser-engraved cross pattern across the entire playing surface. This pattern creates additional friction, which significantly increases spin even when shooting at lower speeds — such as pitches or chips — and gives the ball a maximum “bite” on the green.
Another key factor in the performance of Opus SP wedges is their tour-validated design. The Shape 6 profile is the result of an extensive prototype phase in which the shape was tested and refined on tour to give players a clear and confidence-inspiring look on the ball. A progressive shape in gap wedges means that the shape of the club head blends harmoniously with modern iron sets to create a seamless transition from longest iron to wedge.
Particularly noteworthy is the return of the popular X Grind. This high-bounce option (with more bounce) was developed for golfers who have a steeper entry angle or play on solid ground, but still appreciate the versatility of being able to open the playing surface around the green. The X Grind is the ideal balance of fault tolerance and creative playability. In addition, the wedges are available in four other grinds (T, S, C, W) to cover a wide range of swing types and space conditions.
The new Callaway Opus SP wedges are now available at All4Golf and cost 199 EUR with steel shaft and 209 EUR with graphite shaft. With the introduction of Spin Pocket technology, a redesigned hitting surface and a design based on tour feedback, Callaway offers a technologically advanced wedge model that promises golfers more control and spin.
