There are moments in golf that you never forget. The atmosphere when thousands of spectators crowd the dunes of Royal Birkdale. The wind from the English west coast that turns every shot into a decider. The moment when the Champion Golfer of the Year lifts the Claret Jug. The Open Championship is no ordinary golf tournament - it is the oldest major in the world, the only one on European soil and the epitome of links golf in its purest form.

The oldest major in the world
The Claret Jug has been awarded since 1860 - no other tournament in professional golf can look back on a longer and richer history. The Open Championship, often referred to as the "British Open", is the only major on European soil and represents the origins of golf like no other tournament. Links golf, wind, rain, creativity - it's not just technique that counts here, but complete mastery of the forces of nature. The prize money for 2026 amounts to around 17 million US dollars, but for the winners it is the Claret Jug that remains priceless.
Royal Birkdale - a venue in a class of its own
The Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport is one of the most coveted courses in the Open Rota system. The special feature: The fairways run in the natural valleys between the imposing sand dunes - giving spectators an exceptional view of the action. The dunes themselves act as natural grandstands and create a unique amphitheater atmosphere that sets Royal Birkdale apart from other links courses. in 2026, the tournament will be held for the eleventh time on this legendary course, which opened back in 1889.
Scottie Scheffler comes as defending champion
After his triumph in Royal Portrush in 2025, Scottie Scheffler will travel to Birkdale as defending champion. With his victory, the American secured his fourth Major title and impressively proved that he shows no weakness even on the demanding links courses. The question is: Can he lift the Claret Jug a second time - or will another world-class player take it?
An experience for all the senses
On the tournament days, well over 100,000 spectators flock to the course - and the atmosphere is simply incomparable. The audience is knowledgeable, passionate and dedicated to the sport. Unlike many other golf tournaments, there are hardly any commercial advertising partners present, which puts the focus entirely on the sport. Plus: fish & chips, British ale in the Spectator Village and the knowledge that you are at the world's oldest major live.
However, visitors should bring one thing with them: weatherproof clothing and waterproof shoes. "Four seasons in one day" - this British saying applies particularly well to Southport in July.
