J.J. Spaun has won the 125th US Open. The American held off Robert MacIntyre (+1 overall) by two strokes in persistent rain at Oakmont Country Club, with Viktor Hovland (+3) a further stroke behind in third place. The 34-year-old Spaun was the only player on the par-70 course to remain under par after four rounds. He picks up 4.3 million dollars for his second ever victory on the PGA Tour. He also jumps to sixth place in the FedEx Cup, the American circuit's season ranking.
The start of the final round of this US Open was anything but promising for Spaun. After six holes, he was five over Par and had seemingly quickly shot himself out of the race for the title. After starting the round just one shot behind the then leader Sam Burns, he was now well behind. But then came a rain break lasting almost an hour and a half, "which changed the vibe of the day", as the winner later summed it up. Hovland thought at the time: "After his start, it looked like he had shot himself out of the race immediately."
But things turned out differently. Because after the rain break, Spaun only made a single Bogey. And because his rivals fell behind one after the other and the wet Fairways and greens caused problems for almost the entire field, the Californian recovered shot after shot, position after position. The drama culminated in the longest holed Putt of this US Open 2025 when Spaun holed from almost 20 meters for Birdie on the last hole to seal the decision.
From the early frustration to the late exhilaration!

The second-placed Scot watched on TV as he signed his scorecard and applauded spontaneously when he had to concede defeat. Tyrrell Hatton, who finished tied fourth after a Bogey-Bogey finish, also paid tribute: "Unbelievable. What a Putt to win. I'm sad about my finish, but very happy for J.J. To win a major like that is fantastic."
"I never thought I would hold this trophy in my hands," said Spaun, who finished last year in 119th place in the world rankings, at the presentation ceremony. "I always had ambitions and dreams. I never knew what my upper limit was. I just try to be the best golfer I can be."
