Anyone who gets a front row seat at the US Masters 2026 usually hopes for a signed program booklet or an unforgettable photo. However, one lady in the "North Shop" at Augusta National almost went home with a far more exclusive souvenir on Thursday - albeit completely involuntarily.
The first round was underway on hole 8, the Par-5 "Yellow Jasmine", when world-class golfer Xander Schauffele misjudged his tee shot far to the left. While the spectators were already turning their heads and the obligatory "Fore" shouts echoed through the trees, the ball found a landing spot that even experienced commentators had never seen before: it landed precisely in the white merchandise bag of a spectator.

The video of the scene spread like wildfire on social media. A visibly amused Schauffele can be seen examining the unusual situation together with an official. Instead of playing the ball directly from the bag, as loudly demanded by humorous fans, in accordance with the golf maxim "Play it where it lies", the rules for movable obstructions applied.
Schauffele marked the position of the bag with a Tee, removed his playing implement and handed her property back to the lady in her pink and white outfit. For the American, the incident was more than just a funny side note. "That was a great break," Schauffele later said with relief. "That bounce would otherwise have sent me into the pine needles, and who knows if I would have had any chance at all of playing the ball towards the green from there."

Despite the bizarre stop, Schauffele showed nerves of steel and saved par on the 8th. The world number ten at the US Masters 2026 has shown his fighting spirit so far. His round was characterized by highs and lows: On hole 9, he once again found himself in the dreaded pine needles and landed in the Bunker, only to save himself with a spectacular shot from the sand to within a few centimetres of the flag.
In the end, Schauffele signed for a round of 70 (-2). This keeps him in direct contact with the leaders around Rory McIlroy and proves that he not only has the necessary bit of luck at the US Masters 2026, but also the form for his first Green Jacket.
While ESPN's TV analysts dryly remarked that this was "a first" for them too, the net was already celebrating the incident under the hashtag "BagSecured". It is not known whether the spectator was allowed to keep her unexpected guest - Schauffele preferred to mark the ball herself with a Birdie on the following holes. But one thing is certain: this tee shot will go down as one of the craziest moments in the history of Augusta National.
