While the spectators were already turning their heads and the obligatory "Fore" shouts echoed through the trees, the ball found a landing spot that even experienced commentators had never seen before: it landed precisely in the white merchandise bag of a spectator.

A "break" at the right time

The video of the scene spread like wildfire on social media. A visibly amused Schauffele can be seen examining the unusual situation together with an official. Instead of playing the ball directly from the bag, as loudly demanded by humorous fans, in accordance with the golf maxim "Play it where it lies", the rules for movable obstructions applied.

Schauffele marked the position of the bag with a Tee, removed his playing implement and handed her property back to the lady in her pink and white outfit. For the American, the incident was more than just a funny side note. "That was a great break," Schauffele later said with relief. "That bounce would otherwise have sent me into the pine needles, and who knows if I would have had any chance at all of playing the ball towards the green from there."
