Sepp Straka withdrew from the BMW Championship on the PGA Tour a few weeks ago without giving a reason. Fans were puzzled as to why the Viennese, who was in third place in the FedEx Cup at the time, did not want to compete. Especially as he was not only jeopardizing his fantastic starting position in the race for the millions in prize money in the season finale of the PGA Tour, but also risked forfeiting his place in Europe's Ryder Cup team, which he thought was safe. But as it has now turned out, there are good reasons for this.
Luke Donald, captain of Team Europe at the Ryder Cup for the second year running, revealed ahead of the DP World Tour's Irish Open that Strake and his wife Paige have become parents for the second time. As the baby, whose name is not yet public, was born prematurely, the two-time season winner on the PGA Tour has been spending every possible minute with his family recently. "Yes, everything is fine. I don't think there's been an official statement yet, but he and his wife delivered their baby prematurely a few weeks ago," Donald revealed. "Everything is going very well with their baby. He just doesn't want to be that far away. I think that's only fair," Golfweek quoted from the press conference.
While the rest of Donald's team will line up together for the BMW PGA Championship, Straka will be given some time and enjoys the confidence of his skipper: "I've often spoken to Sepp. He is very motivated. He will continue to work hard on his game. He will accompany us on the training trip. But that's also the reason why he won't be at Wentworth."
Straka was named to Team Europe last Monday as one of six captain's picks by Donald. He won on the PGA Tour this season in both January and May. The 32-year-old made his debut at the Ryder Cup two years ago in Rome when Europe beat Team USA. The Ryder Cup begins on September 26 at Bethpage Black in New York.
