The fascination of golf lies not least in its complex rules. One area that often causes confusion is the penalty area - the official term for what golfers used to know as water hazards. Since the major rule revision in 2019, the scope of these zones has been expanded. But whether it's a ditch, lake or impassable bushes: red and yellow markings clearly define what options players have if their ball lands there. This article explains what you need to know about the penalty area as a golfer.
Apenalty area is a special area of the golf course from which you can claim relief with a penalty stroke if your ball is unplayable there. It is marked by colored stakes or lines, whereby the color is decisive for the relief options. Unlike in the past, these areas do not necessarily have to contain water. Match officials can also declare other areas, such as dense undergrowth or impassable scree fields, as penalty areas in order to promote a smoother game.

Playing from the penalty area (without penalty stroke)In many cases, a ball that lands in a penalty area is still playable. The Rules of Golf allow you to play the ball from where it lies. Since 2019, you have been allowed to place the club in the penalty area before hitting the ball and remove loose obstacles such as leaves or small branches - as long as the ball does not move. This option is penalty-free, but often requires a high degree of skill, as the position of the ball is often unfavorable.
