German golfer Caroline Masson caused a sensation at the LPGA Tour's Portland Classic with a dream shot. In the first round of the tournament, she made a hole-in-one on the second hole of the Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Oregon.
Masson used her 7-iron for the 153-yard (around 140 meters) shot. By her own account, she was initially unhappy with the execution. "It was a bit surprising because sometimes I feel like you hit a good shot and think: 'Go in, go in' It didn't even occur to me that it could go in," she said later. The 36-year-old only realized the ace when the spectators cheered loudly. Her caddie was also stunned: "I can't believe that just happened."

It was Masson's first hole-in-one on the LPGA Tour since 2017, but the magical shot had more than just sporting value. As part of the CME Group Cares Challenge, a donation of 20,000 US dollars was made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a charity to which Masson was happy to contribute. "It's a great cause. I think we see that a lot in golf and it's great for us players to be able to do something and contribute."
Although Masson's start was promising with a strong 5-under Par round, she was unable to keep up the momentum over the following days. In the end, she finished in a tie for 49th place. The tournament was won by Akie Iwai from Japan.
