Almost three decades after the 1996 cult classic, Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) is back, and he has lost none of his unconventional charm. "Happy Gilmore 2", directed by Kyle Newacheck, brings the beloved golfing hoodlum to the green for another round - this time with an even bigger ensemble of stars and plenty of nostalgic moments.
In the new movie, we find Happy Gilmore years after his triumphant victory in the first film. He has retired from professional golf and is leading a seemingly quieter life. But a new, urgent reason forces him back onto the golf course. This time it's the future of his daughter Vienna (played by Sandler's real-life daughter Sunny Sandler), whose dream of becoming a ballet dancer is at stake. In order to raise the necessary funds for her training at the prestigious Paris Opera Ballet School, Happy has to swing the golf club again and face the challenges of the modern golf world.
Of course, his return to the sport is anything but silent. Happy not only has to deal with his own age and possible new physical limitations, but also with a new generation of golfers and the changing dynamics of the sport. His notorious outbursts of anger and unorthodox playing style are still there and provide plenty of comic situations.
"Happy Gilmore 2" thrives on a mixture of nostalgia, Adam Sandler's tried and tested humor and a wealth of cameo appearances that make the film an event for fans of the original. It also incorporates many real-life golf pros as well as numerous other celebrities who play themselves or small roles. This gives the golf tournament scenes a special authenticity and additional entertainment.
Not only Scottie Scheffler is there, but also Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau. A special role has been found for Will Zalatoris, as he looks almost exactly like Happy's caddie in the first part of the film. Naturally, the American was signed up to play the protagonist's bagman. Christopher McDonald returns as the legendary villain Shooter McGavin, and his rivalry with Happy is of course still a central element. Eminem and Travis Kelce also make guest appearances.
"Happy Gilmore 2" is a film for fans of the original who are looking forward to another dose of Adam Sandler's distinctive humor and the return of a beloved character. And golf fans will especially enjoy the numerous guest appearances.
A lot of promo material was also created in the shadow of the film. This included an episode of DeChambeau's video series "Break 50". In it, he attempts to play a round of scramble under 50 alongside other professional golfers or celebrities. For the premiere of Happy Gilmore 2, an episode with leading actor Sandler has now been released in which you can see the actor's real skills on the golf course.
And it's very entertaining. Apart from the fact that Sandler swears like a tinker and not a hole goes by where his tirades don't have to be "bleeped". However, the 58-year-old doesn't just impress with his rants, but also shows here and there that he's not a bad golfer. On the last hole, he even manages a sensational shot that even Happy Gilmore would be jealous of.
