Those who venture into the Anza-Borrego Desert expect vastness, silence, and impressive natural phenomena. Yet, amidst this barren landscape, about a three-hour drive southeast of Los Angeles, lies a golfing highlight that is regularly found among the top 100 public courses in the USA: Rams Hill Golf Club. Designed by star architect Tom Fazio, the course is a prime example of modern desert golf and is still considered an exclusive insider tip in California, at least in Europe.
Rams Hill is not a course for monotonous play. The design utilizes the characteristic elements of the desert – cacti, expansive waste areas, and strategically placed bunkers – but skillfully combines them with water hazards, predominantly fed by irrigation ponds. With a total length ranging from 5,037 to an impressive 7,209 yards, the par-72 course offers the perfect setting for every skill level, thanks to five different tee boxes per hole. Since temperatures often climb above 20 degrees Celsius even in January, Rams Hill is also the ideal destination for the German winter.

Precise Approaches and a Thrilling Finish
Tom Fazio's architectural signature is particularly evident in the approach shots. A central theme of the round is the precise targeting of the greens. The combination of holes 11 to 13 is particularly well-executed, as is the thrilling finish on hole 18.
This par-5 demands full concentration from tee to putt: Strategists consistently stay to the left with their tee shot and subsequent lay-up. To the right of the fairway, the terrain drops treacherously towards the water, and formidable bunkers also lurk there. Approximately 90 yards before the green, a massive bunker in the middle of the fairway awaits imprecise shots. The green itself is designed like a small arena, with contours and undulations that can be cleverly used for the final putt.
