In the world of golf, short courses often only serve as a training ground or as a quick pastime. But the Battlefield Par-3 course, which opened in 2023 and is part of the Shangri-La Resort in Oklahoma, breaks with this convention. Designer Tom Clark has created a complex here that goes far beyond sports: It is a living memorial to the fallen veterans of Oklahoma.
The entire appearance, from the signs to the clubhouse, is in the distinctive style of the US Army. Inside the clubhouse, memorial areas document the history of the soldiers. Each of the 18 tracks is dedicated to a specific veteran. A memorial plaque on each tee honors the respective soldier with name, rank and unity. This combination of sporting challenge and silent remembrance gives the round a unique emotional depth.
Here you can find numerous other travel reports from the most beautiful golf courses in the world.
In terms of playing technology, “The Battlefield” has little in common with a classic pitch-and-putt course. With lanes that vary between 112 and 246 yards, the entire iron repertoire is queried. Depending on the choice of tea boxes, the total length of the course varies between 1,510 and a remarkable 2,951 yards — real golf is required here.
The round starts with a 148 yards long track, whose green sloping to the left requires maximum precision. As the round progresses, the difficulty increases steadily. Lane 15 is a highlight for tacticians: A 205 yards long shot across a pond onto an undulating green. With up to 246 yards, lane 16 is probably the biggest test. Here, the ball must be played slightly uphill over water. Despite its length, there is plenty of room available in the landing zone, which even allows tactical presentation — a rarity on par 3 courses.
Despite the sophisticated layout, the idea of inclusion was not forgotten. The so-called “FELIX Tees” drastically shorten the tracks and transform the challenging course into a beginner-friendly course for families and children.
The end is the 18th track, which leads back to the clubhouse over 175 yards. The slightly rising shot must be placed precisely on a green hanging forward, which is guarded by deep bunkers — a final test of concentration before you round off the round in a historic setting.
The Battlefield Par-3 course impressively demonstrates that memorial culture and modern leisure activities can be successfully combined. It offers the opportunity to test the iron game under pressure while at the same time remembering the sacrifices of those to whom the course is dedicated. A system that has a long-lasting effect, both physically and emotionally.
