Anyone looking for the ultimate golfing experience in southern Spain will inevitably come across the “golden triangle” of golf: Together with Real Club Valderrama and Real Club Sotogrande, the San Roque Golf Club with the Old Course forms a world-class triad. The complex looks back on a history that goes far beyond sport: The current clubhouse, a magnificent manor house, was once the seat of the famous Domecq sherry dynasty.
Since its opening in 1991, the par 72 course designed by Dave Thomas has established itself as one of the most prestigious addresses in the region. The tea box system is a special feature: Instead of the usual colors, the tees are named after the total length of the round — from “49” (4,874 meters) to “63” (6,311 meters).
Here you can find many more travel reports from the most beautiful golf courses in the world.
Before you set the first drive, you should know: The greens are fast as an arrow, heavily undulating and often hang forward. The round starts in a demanding way with a 479 meter long par 5, which rewards courage. The fact that San Roque is no place for “Hit and Hope” can be seen at the latest on track 2. This par 4 is considered the most difficult hole for men and requires a precise shot across a pond — often under the eyes of spectators on the clubhouse terrace.
The topography is used cleverly: While you play downhill on track 4, it's noticeably uphill on 6. Here, the choice of racquet is decisive in order to safely reach the elevated green defended by bunkers. Water hazards also mark the end of the first half, in particular on the 8th — the most difficult hole for women — and the 9th, where the green is once again bordered by a pond.
The Back Nine seamlessly continue the high standard. Lane 16 challenges perfect length control with a long, narrow green on a par 3, while the last par 5 (lane 17) starts with a blind tea shot.
To top it off track 18, the clubhouse itself serves as a guide: Golfers should center their drive between the distinctive towers of the manor house in order to safely place the blind tee on the wavy fairway.
A day at San Roque Golf Club doesn't end with the last putt. The historic ambiance of the Domecq Residence invites you to review the day in the excellent restaurant or the well-stocked pro shop. Anyone looking for first-class golf in an environment that breathes sport and Andalusian history will love the Old Course.
