Just a few kilometers from the German border, nestled in the vast landscapes of Groote Peel, Het Woold Golfbaan Asten is a golf course that impresses with its variety and service. The centrepiece is the 18-hole championship course Vier Eijckenbaan, supplemented by a well-maintained 9-hole par 3 course. Even at the reception, it becomes clear that hospitality is a top priority here — from friendly secretariats to restaurants. A small but significant detail: Early starters are even provided with free coffee or tea during the round.
The par 72 championship course offers five tees per lane and is between 4,459 and 6,235 meters, depending on the tea box. It is aimed at ambitious players as well as connoisseurs. Its particular appeal lies in the variety of landscapes: sections of parkland alternate with heathlands and water-marked railways — each half of the course tells its own story.
Here you can find numerous other travel reports from the most beautiful golf courses in the world.
The start is comparatively tame. Two short to medium-length par 4 lanes lead through tree-covered paths where a straight tee is required and raised greens require a precise approach. At lane 3 at the latest, however, the course shows character: An almost rectangular dogleg par 5 forces a decision between a bold line and a defensive lay-up, while trees and a small pond structure the fairway. The following par-4 also poses tactical requirements, as water lurks in the driveland zone as well as close to the green.
With the first par-3, the scenery changes noticeably. The heath comes to the foreground, the rough becomes more treacherous and the greens are more inclined. Water becomes the dominant element from lane 7: A sharp dogleg par 4 requires a controlled tee before the second shot has to be led across a moat to the green. The Front Nine ends with a demanding par 5, with water and bunkers defending the last few meters of the flag.
The Back Nine continue this diversity. Narrow tee corridors between tall trees alternate with more open fairways, with water coming into play again and again — sometimes sideways, sometimes frontally. The long par 5 on track 12 is particularly impressive with several changes of direction and a moat around 130 meters in front of the green. Anyone who gets too greedy here quickly pays a high price.
The par 3 lanes of the second half of the round are also memorable: The ball has to be carried over large areas of water several times. The final phase once again combines all elements of the round. Short, strategic par 4 holes invite you to think before another water-based par 3 requires concentration. The finale is a long par 5, which gently curves back through park-like terrain and offers a final test with an inclined green.
The Het Woold Golfbaan Asten impresses with well-maintained holes, intelligent design and a strong price-performance ratio. Long hitters find their challenges as well as precise shot makers. Anyone who lingers in the courtyard of the clubhouse with good food will quickly realize that this complex not only offers varied golf, but also a real feel-good atmosphere.
