In the international golf world, there is regular debate about which course is the best on the planet. For many experts, one thing is certain: If you're looking for the ultimate left-hand golf experience, you can't miss the Royal County Down Golf Club in Northern Ireland. Located around an hour south of Belfast, the complex is considered one of the most outstanding links courses in the world.
A visit should be well planned: Since the green fee creates a noticeable hole in the travel budget during high season, price-conscious golfers like to switch to the months of November to March. Regardless of the season, a caddy is highly recommended to overcome the pitfalls of the course. A warm welcome in the clubhouse with free coffee and the welcome from the starter on track 1 round off the exclusive experience.
Here you can find many more travel reports from the most beautiful golf courses in the world.
The first nine holes are considered to be some of the most beautiful and at the same time difficult holes that golf has to offer. Lanes 1 to 3 run right by the sea and offer spectacular views of the dune ridges. The course is nestled in the Murlough Nature Reserve, with the imposing silhouette of the Mountains of Mourne enthroned in the background.
An absolute highlight is track 4, a par-3 almost 200 meters long. Players should definitely visit the championship tee to enjoy the magnificent panoramic view for the iconic photo (square, sea and mountains). The ninth track, a par 4, is one of the most photographed holes in the world: A blind tea shot leads over a hill before the track drops around 20 meters deep and offers a view of the Mourne Range.
Unusually for a classic links course, the Front Nine ends right at the clubhouse. The back nine then takes players to the back point of the system before returning under the motto “homeward bound.” Although these tracks are considered a nuance lighter than the front nine, they still require full attention.
The 16th runway is outstanding, a short par 4 at a good 300 meters, which encourages long hitters to go green. The 17th track has a rare surprise: the only water hazard of the round — a small pond in the fairway that often magically attracts balls. The end is a challenging par 5 whose fairway is lined by countless bunkers.
Royal County Down is a physical and mental challenge. Anyone who even comes close to playing their handicap on this historic terrain should rightly be proud. But even if the score isn't right, the experience on one of the most beautiful golf courses in the world remains unforgettable.
