Just around 15 minutes from central Helsinki, Tapiola Golf surprises with a concept that is rare in European golf: a true inland links course created on the site of a former municipal landfill. What sounds unusual at first has developed into one of southern Finland's most exciting golf addresses since it opened in 2013. The par 72 course stretches for up to 6,115 meters, offers four tees per lane and combines modern architecture with a classic left-wing character.
Tapiola is open, hilly and largely tree-free. Dune grasses, distinctive earth waves and a variety of deeply modelled bunkers characterize the picture. Water hazards are deliberately scarce, as dry, firm fairways and heavily undulating greens provide sporting challenges. Despite its location in the urban area, the square remains surprisingly quiet. The frequent wind — favored by the proximity to the coast — further reinforces the authentic left-wing feeling. Architects Timothy Nugent and Jan Sederholm created a layout that clearly places strategic thinking above pure pitch lengths.

Even the start makes it clear what golfers are getting into: A par-5 with double dogleg and blind tee immediately requires full concentration. The short par-3 on track 2 with two-stage green and a powerful front bunker also requires precision. The tee starts again and again without a direct view of the fairway or green — a recurring stylistic device of the course that requires confidence in line and length.
The Front Nine are varied with heavily moving greens that mercilessly punish incorrect positions. The undulating fairways are particularly characteristic, which are not only visually impressive but also influence the position and position of the ball. The ninth track, which is also one of the most difficult of the round, combines these elements in an exemplary manner: blind tee, dogleg, moving fairway and a sophisticated sculpted green.
The back nine seamlessly continue this level. Longer par 4 lanes, cleverly placed bunkers and greens with narrow entrances increase the strategic requirements. Particularly memorable is the only par-3 in the second half of the course, where a barely visible moat — a classic “burn” — defends the green frontally. The same applies here: If you ignore the playing board, you risk unnecessary ball losses.
The final section increases the tension even more. Several long, sometimes blind tees require careful planning before the round ends on a spectacular final track. There, a light dogleg meets heavily undulated terrain and an imposing bunker landscape around a two-level green — a demanding and dignified conclusion.
Tapiola Golf impresses as a modern, intelligent left-hand hybrid near the metropolis. Wide fairways, complex greens and strategically placed bunkers provide variety and challenge game intelligence. The course combines sporting ambitions with urban accessibility and is a must stop for golfers who are looking for a real left-wing feeling away from the coast.
