The golf market is evolving rapidly from a technological standpoint. While the digital transformation of the sport is often focused on performance optimization, Garmin demonstrates with its two latest models—the Approach J1 and the Approach G82—just how varied the target audience can be: from fostering young talent in a fun and playful way to data-driven analysis for performance-oriented daily use.
With the Approach J1, Garmin introduces a GPS golf watch designed specifically for children and teenagers. The manufacturer’s goal here is not so much to create a highly complex data hub, but rather to provide a tool for developing a proper understanding of the rhythm of the game and strategy.
The case, with a diameter of 43 millimeters and weighing just 29 grams, was designed so as not to interfere with the swing. A key feature for the young target audience is the simplified, child-friendly presentation of data on the 1.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen.

Key features of the Approach J1:
Features such as heart rate monitoring and contactless payment were intentionally omitted from this model to sharpen the focus on core golf functions. With a GPS battery life of up to 15 hours, the device is designed for extended practice days and tournament rounds.
At the other end of the spectrum is the Approach G82. This is a combined device that integrates GPS navigation with the functionality of a portable Launch-Monitor. Garmin is targeting ambitious golfers who want to precisely measure their performance both on the driving range and out on the course.
At its heart is a high-resolution 5-inch touchscreen display, which is used for both course navigation and analyzing shot data.

Key features of the Approach G82:
With a battery life of up to 25 hours in GPS mode, the device reaffirms its status as a reliable companion for all-day golfing. Thanks to its ability to pair with other Garmin products, such as the Approach Z30, the G82 can also be integrated into a comprehensive ecosystem.
With these two models, Garmin demonstrates a clear differentiation in golf technology: The Approach J1 focuses on making it easier for young players to get started in golf through a simplified design and playful elements. The Approach G82, on the other hand, provides experienced players with a data set that was previously only available at stationary training centers. Both products underscore the trend toward making golf more accessible—and, depending on one’s goals, more effective—through technical support.
