On the Wednesday before the start of the BMW International Open, amateurs traditionally competed alongside the participating professionals in the ProAm tournament, including numerous celebrities. Not only footballers Oliver Bierhoff, Tim Borowski and Ralph Hasenhüttl were there, but also Gareth Bale, Paul Ripke and Philipp Kohlschreiber battled for Birdies alongside Martin Kaymer and Co. The atmosphere was exuberant in the glorious sunshine, even if the heat sapped energy as the day progressed.
The only German winner in the tournament's history, Martin Kaymer, played together with "Golden Goal hero" Oliver Bierhoff, former national player Tim Borowski and coach Ralph Hassenhüttl (AUT). Six-time Olympic champions Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt (luge doubles) formed a "golden trio" with three-time biathlon Olympic champion Michael Greis. "It's just mega that we can be here at the BMW International Open," said a delighted Arlt. "It's incredibly nice to be able to play in this weather. It's great to be able to enjoy the Pro-Am with the pros and learn things from them." His colleague Wendl was also thrilled: "It's incredibly impressive to experience what the pros deliver here. But it's also nice to see the people. We are normally always alone on the golf course. So it's great to see how many people are passionate about golf."
Ice hockey was also prominently represented with NHL stars Moritz Seider and Tim Stützle as well as national player Maximilian Kastner. In Philipp Kohlschreiber, record winner of the BMW Open ATP tournament in Munich, a former world-class tennis player also proved that he knows how to handle a golf club. From the film industry, actors Kai Wiesinger and Kostja Ullmann as well as director, screenwriter and producer Florian Gallenberger were at the start. Gallenberger, who was born in Munich, was awarded an Oscar in the short film category in 2001. Star photographer Paul Ripke also showed off his skills on the Championship Course.
