The opening round of the 2025 Ryder Cup on the infamous Bethpage Black course in Farmingdale, New York, ended with a demonstration of power from the guests: Team Europe leads by a clear 5.5 to 2.5 after day one. The Europeans celebrated their best start on US soil since 2004, winning both sessions and putting the American superstars in the shade. The US boys now have to start a historic race to catch up.
The European team went into the day with the clear strategy of dampening the mood in the New York setting early on - and they succeeded. In the morning, they achieved a commanding 3-1 victory in the foursomes. Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood won their match decisively 5&4. Particularly surprising was the clear 5&3 victory of the new pairing Ludvig Åberg and Matt Fitzpatrick against the top-class Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley. The only US point in this session was secured by Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele.

Even in the afternoon, when the crowd became noticeably more enthusiastic, Team Europe retained the upper hand and won the fourballs session 2.5 to 1.5.
The drama came to a head on the final holes:

The Ryder Cup 2025 results after day one reflect a clear discrepancy in the performance of key players. The axis of Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy was unstoppable on the day. All three remained unbeaten and scored 4.5 out of a possible 8 points.
The USA's world number one faltered.
The only bright spot was rookie Cameron Young. The New Yorker celebrated a dominant 6&5 victory alongside Justin Thomas in his first Ryder Cup appearance: "To have the opportunity to play alongside him [Thomas] today in front of these fans is very special."

The captains analyzed the situation in contrasting ways after the end of the day.
Luke Donald (Europe) praised the mental strength of his players, especially in view of the vociferous crowd: "Incredible day. The win in the morning was huge for us and we all know how important a good start is. [...] The boys handled it with absolute class and composure."
Keegan Bradley (USA) was defiant and persistent: "We've only played 28% of the points. That's the first quarter. We still have three quarters to go. [...] We're not going to panic and make mistakes like that. We're going to stick to what we know."

For the Ryder Cup 2025 results on Saturday, Luke Donald is relying on proven strength: he is sending exactly the four winning Foursomes pairings from Friday into the race again.
Keegan Bradley is also sticking to the plan, but is making one change: Cameron Young replaces Justin Thomas alongside Bryson DeChambeau. Bradley defended the retention of the controversial pairing of Collin Morikawa and Harris English, who lost 5&4 on Friday: "We're really happy with our plan. We're really happy with those two players."
The USA must now score quickly on Saturday morning to force a turnaround in the competition and prevent Europe from extending its lead in New York.
