Mijas Golf, Los Lagos Course: A Robert Trent Jones Sr. design near Málaga

Located just about 20 minutes from Málaga Airport, near the coastal town of Fuengirola, lies the renowned Los Lagos Course at Mijas Golf. Designed by none other than legendary golf architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., this 18-hole, Par-72 course opened in 1976; its classic design was brought up to USGA standards during a comprehensive modernization in 2012.

The name “Los Lagos” says it all: A total of nine expansive water hazards define the course’s character and demand strategic course management from players on holes ranging from 5,153 to 6,536 meters in length. Thanks to continuous cart paths and a modernized irrigation system, the course offers excellent playability year-round.

Front Nine: Water Features and the Challenge of Hole 6

The round begins with a downhill, left-dogleg Par-5 hole up to 508 meters long, where a waterway and—typical of Trent Jones—elevated greens await the approach shot in the second half. Precision quickly proves to be the key to a good score: The Par-4 third hole is visually striking, with a green surrounded by a pond and a water fountain, while the fourth hole leads into a narrow fairway between a Bunker and water.

The longest par-5 of the round, at 580 meters on the 5th hole, demands a tactical approach shot before another pond. The 6th hole is considered the most difficult on the course—a 423-meter par-4 that requires tremendous distance and precisely placed shots, especially when playing into the wind. After the longest par-3 on the course—at 220 meters—on the 8th hole, the first half of the round concludes with a slightly uphill par-4.

Back Nine: Water Features and the Ball Sculpture

The back nine opens with a 418-meter downhill par-4, followed by a par-3 on hole 11 that is played over a water hazard and past a stylized golf ball sculpture. Hole 13 features an impressive Par-5 challenge: From the elevated tee, the course slopes downhill before ponds on both sides of the Fairway and a connecting waterway just before the green demand full concentration.

At 475 meters, the shortest Par-5 on hole 15 offers opportunities for long hitters but requires the ball to stop quickly due to the bunker-laden surroundings. The finale leads slightly uphill on hole 17 toward the clubhouse, before the round ends on the 338-meter-long Par-4 18th hole, where an undulating Fairway and an uphill green demand a final shot of precision.
