Perched high above the cliffs of the South African coastal town of Knysna, the Pezula Championship Course is a spectacular golfing gem. With five different tee boxes per hole, the course offers golfers of all skill levels a tailored and fair experience. However, anyone teeing off here for the first time should be prepared for changeable weather, as the region is known for rapid shifts in the weather.
Much like its famous neighbor, Pinnacle Point, Pezula is located right on the ocean. Even though the panoramic views are slightly less dramatic, the course impresses with its outstanding quality, with the varied and challenging back nine holes standing out in particular.
Here you’ll find numerous other travel reports on the world’s most beautiful golf courses.
The opening hole demands full concentration right away: Hole 1 is a Par-5 ranging from 396 to 550 meters in length, where players must clear a deep ravine, and a cautious three-shot approach is the wisest choice. The following par-4 winds in a semicircle around a lake, while Hole 3—a short par-3 with a total of eight Bunkers—demands precision.
The course leads past an uphill dogleg on Hole 4 and a Par-3 rising up to 200 meters in elevation to Hole 6, which offers deep fairway bunkers alongside fantastic views of Knysna. After the seventh hole, the front nine concludes at the 9th with a wind-prone Par-5 that becomes a real test of patience with headwinds and massive Bunkers on the right side of the green.
The Back Nine take variety and drama to the next level. Hole 10 begins as a smooth downhill right-hand 90-degree dogleg before the path to the green climbs noticeably again. Starting with Hole 12, the course heads directly toward the ocean with spectacular views: Since the green lies far below the tee, this Par-4 plays noticeably shorter than its 428 meters. The elevation difference on the following Par-5 tempts players to attack the heavily undulating green with their second shot.
Hole 14 proves to be the absolute highlight and signature hole of the course: This par-4, which is only up to 289 meters long, lies on a lower plateau and is characterized by such an imposing landscape of bunkers that one might think the grass and sand had switched places. The course really picks up the pace for the finale: After a downhill par-3 on the 15th and tactical challenges on the 16th and 17th, the 18th hole serves as the crowning finale—a par-5 up to 481 meters long that runs steadily uphill and requires a blind second shot.
