Nestled in the mild Tuscan climate of the island of Elba, the Hermitage Golf Club offers a charming and relaxed golfing experience for players of all skill levels. The nine-hole course was designed in 1980 by Paolo De Ferrari, who perfectly complemented the tourist offerings of the Hermitage and Biodola hotels.
With a maximum total length of just 1,275 meters and a layout dominated by par-3 holes, the course may seem compact at first glance, but it demands one thing above all else from players: absolute precision. A unique feature is the driving range in the middle of the course, where, thanks to special floating balls, players can even practice hitting shots directly into the water.
Here you’ll find numerous other travel reports on the world’s most beautiful golf courses.
Although the course is manageable in size, the hilly terrain demands physical effort—especially in the second half—which is why nostalgic golf carts—genuine vintage cars with character—are available for rent. Dogs are also welcome in the carts upon request. The course is charmingly unspoiled, while the views are simply breathtaking: From the eighth green, the view sweeps across the picturesque Gulf of Biodola and Scaglieri all the way to the offshore island of Capraia.
Play begins from red and yellow tees, and the holes offer little room for error when it comes to lateral deviation. The opening hole alone leads from a slightly elevated yellow tee across a narrow Par-3, where old pine trees and dense bushes lie in wait. After some tricky short holes with dips and elevated greens, the course’s only Par-4 comes on the 3rd hole: a 220-meter dogleg to the right, shielded by dense bushes and trees.
The following holes demand your full concentration, with some noticeable elevation changes, narrow Fairways, and treacherous rocks. The spectacular finale is the ninth hole, a Par-3 that runs downhill for up to 155 meters, where the green appears almost like an impregnable island due to the adjacent pond.
