The Wicklow Golf Club is a true hidden gem in County Wicklow, Ireland, about an hour’s drive from the capital, Dublin. Although the club is primarily run as a traditional members-only club, guest players are always welcomed with open arms.
At first glance, the par-71 course—with three tees per tee box and a total length ranging from 4,522 to 5,518 meters—appears relatively short. But appearances can be deceiving: steep slopes and frequent uphill shots give the holes a noticeable perceived length. The green fee is also extremely reasonable.
Here you’ll find numerous other travel reports on the world’s most beautiful golf courses.
The opening hole is already spectacular: Directly in front of the pro shop, the first tee leads down to the lower-lying Fairway, while the view of the ruins of Black Castle accompanies the shot on this Par-5 hole, which is up to 477 meters long. Hole 3, known as “Hens & Chickens,” is extremely treacherous: Despite its short distance of 241 meters, the steep incline forces even long hitters to fight hard for every meter of elevation.
One of the absolute highlights is the Par-4 sixth hole, with the evocative name “Pebble Beach.” If the tee box on the rocky outcrop in the sea is playable, a breathtaking carry shot over 170 meters of water awaits. A precise sense of distance is also required on the seventh hole, a short 125-meter Par-3 right on the cliffs.
The second half of the course continues with varied topography. Hole 10 features a sweeping right-hand bend leading to a significantly elevated green. This is followed by steeply ascending Par-4 holes, such as the 12th and 13th, which offer fantastic views of the coast.
The 498-meter-long par-5 14th hole makes optimal use of the sloping terrain and plays significantly shorter than listed. The downhill par-5 16th hole presents an excellent scoring opportunity—provided you avoid a hidden lake. Before the slightly uphill final hole, the challenging Par-3 17th—with a low-lying, bowl-shaped green and a water hazard—puts your nerves to the test once again.
